Seven Game Winning Streak!

Seven Game Winning Streak!

The GC 17 Varsity Boys lacrosse team had another strong week by increasing their win streak to 7 games and improved their record to 7-1. On a beautiful sunny spring break day, the Trojans traveled south to take on the Marines of Long Beach High. With the waves crashing in the background, the Trojans once again crashed an opponent’s hope for an upset. The theme of playing great D, winning face-offs, winning groundballs and sharing the ball on offense led to a 15-4 final. GC had 12 different goal scorers led by JP Basile (5 points), Sean Coughlin (4 points) and Luke Keating (4 points). Other scorers included Kyle Steinbach, Jack McManus, Liam Muldoon and Charlie Comiskey. Coughlin scored an exciting goal at the horn to end the first half with a feed from Keating with 1 second on the clock. “I think we caught them by surprise and I knew Luke would see me cutting to the cage”, Coughlin said. The face-off trio of Gunn, Steinbach and Coppola once again showed the depth of GC as they dominated. This was a well-deserved league win by the entire roster.

On Saturday April 15th, a good early season crowd including former Trojan Hall of Fame coach Doc Dougherty turned out to see the Trojans take on Duxbury High School from Massachusetts. GC and Duxbury began their New York- New England Rivalry in 2011. GC won the first 3 meetings by a combined score of 30-6. Duxbury got some revenge in 2015 by beating the Trojans 9-7 in a very physical “chippy” game at Harvard Stadium. Many of the seniors on this year’s team remember that game and what it felt like to drive 4 hours home after a tough defeat. Those seniors and the rest of the Trojan squad delivered a little payback by winning 11-1. It wasn’t the Yankees beating the Sox or Jets beating Brady but it’s always enjoyable to defeat a Boston/ New England rival. The frustrated Duxbury offense wasn’t able to score until midway thru the 4th qtr. Eric Mueller was outstanding in goal with 7 saves and once again he had significant help from the entire defense. The two future Bucknell University defensemen of Phil Puccio /Timmy Gormley were outstanding with Matt Granville, Tyler Wuchte and Jack McManus playing great D at Middie. Offensively, the Irish contingent of Finn Gibbons, Jaime Atkinson and Luke Keating led the balanced attack. Gibbons with 4 goals and 2 assists said “our shorties kept winning the battle behind which opened it up for our shooters up top”. As gracious hosts, GC fed the Duxbury team some Long Island Deli sandwiches before they began their long journey back to Beantown.

On Wednesday, April 19th the Trojans played nationally ranked St Ignatius Prep of San Francisco, CA at Hofstra University. This article went to print prior to the game’s conclusion and we will hopefully report on that win next week!

Next up for the Trojans:

• Friday April 21st 7pm at South Side

• Wed April 26th 430pm at New Hyde park

• Saturday April 29th 7pm at Manhasset ( Woodstick Classic)

Additional Lax Notes:

The feeder system for Coach Finnell remains strong with the boys JV team dominating and winning their first 8 games. Coach Flatley is looking forward to the upcoming JV Woodstick.

The NCAA has passed a proposal which prohibits Men’s and Women’s College lacrosse coaches from communicating with students prior to September 1st of their Junior year. This will change the landscape of college lacrosse recruiting for the better and perhaps make it a more enjoyable experience for families. For those dads with boys in the class of 2028, take a deep breath before you sign your child up for 2nd grade travel and enjoy the journey!
