On Saturday, December 15 th, the Recreation Department will hold its annual Christmas Show featuring Bill White, the magician and a special visit from Santa. The show will begin at 10 a.m. and the entrance fee will be a new unwrapped toy which will be donated to Toys for Tots (one per family). All children attending will have a chance to get their picture taken with Santa (bring your camera) and will receive a small gift. For further information, please call 465-4075.

winter adult tennis lessons now registering

The Recreation Department offers adult tennis lessons in a twelve week session. Our lessons are open to all adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City and are offered at various times during the day and on the weekends.

 

 


If your are interested in lessons for the upcoming winter season, which begins the week of January 13 th, please pick up an adult tennis interest form and return it to the Recreation Office in Village Hall no later than December 28 th. Classes will be put together according to ability and day desired on a first come, first serve basis. You will be contacted by our tennis pro, Carrie Strum, to confirm you class.

The cost of this 12 week, one hour program will be $239. Payment must accompany the interest form. Please make checks payable to “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

Adult Ultimate Tennis Workout – This 1 1/2 hr. workout is for the experienced tennis player who wants to hone his or her skills. It is held on Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. This program will be offered in 10 week sessions with a start date of January 19 th. The cost of the session is $200.

winter yoga at cluett Hall

Our winter session of yoga will begin the week of January 7 th. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each 12 week course will cost $60 and each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s.

Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes.

The course schedule is as follows:

Mondays All level Yoga at 7:30 p.m.

Thursdays All level Yoga at11:30 a.m.

saturday morning BASKETBALL for men

The Recreation Department will begin its Saturday morning Men’s Basketball Program this Saturday, December 1 stin the Garden City Middle School’s south gym. The program runs from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to men aged 19 and older who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The games are strictly “pick up” and entry is free. Proof of residency is needed to enter. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

children’s swim lessons announced

There are limited openings available for children’s swim lessons at Adelphi, which began Saturday, December 1 st. Please visit the Recreation Office in Village hall to check availability or to register.

after school program for grades 3-5

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter Rich Anderson and the Recreation Staff will conduct a gym program for children in grades 3-5.

This program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting. This program will run from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Field House beginning December 3 rd according to the following schedule:

Boys in grades 3-5Mondays from 3:30 – 6 p.m.

Girls in grades 3-5Fridays from 3:30 – 6 p.m.

This program is free and no registration is necessary. Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the field house.

Note-Once the children are in our facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come in to the building to pick up your child and please be prompt.

Middle And High School Open Gym

The Recreation Department will sponsor open gym time Field House for Village students in grades 6-12. The Field House will be open and supervised from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for students to play the following activities.

This program will begin on Tuesday, December 4 th. Games are strictly pickup. This time is set aside for students to enjoy activities with their friends in a supervised setting. No organized practices or parents are allowed during this time. For further information please contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

Letters To Santa

It’s time to send letters to Santa and the Recreation Department will speed up the process. A special “Santa” Mailbox” will be set up in the Village Hall lobby beginning December 3 rd. Children can drop their letters in the mailbox and Santa will send them a personalized reply. Santa’s mailbox will be available from December 3rd through December 19th.

CHRISTMAS CANDY CONTEST

In addition to sending their letters to Santa, kids can take a chance at guessing the number of candy pieces in the jar next to Santa’s Mailbox and the child whose guess is closest to the actual number will win the jar, candy and all! As with Santa’s mailbox, the candy contest will be available from December 3rd to December 19th.

adult swim at adelphi

The Recreation Department’s adult swim program has begun at Adelphi’s indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, aged 18 or older. The program is open to residents for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the Recreation Office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the Recreation Office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time and space is limited.

tennis lessons announced

We are pleased to announce the start of registration for our Winter 2008 Indoor Tennis Program for Children at the community Park Tennis Center. In addition to our lesson programs, we will again offer round robin Match Play and Workout Programs. Supervised practice time is included for all lesson participants (except PeeWees) on a first come, first serve basis and limited to 6 players per time period.

Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.

To register: by mail only, no walk-in registrations will be accepted until December 3 rd. We can not be held responsible for delays in the mail. To register, pick up an application at the Recreation Office in Village Hall. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and classes for which you are registering. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

aerobic classes in cluett hall

The Recreation Dept’s.’s aerobic classes are just the thing to get your heart pumping and your body moving. Classes are taught by experienced aerobic instructors who try to tailor their program to the level of the participants.

Classes are offered at Cluett Hall in St. Paul’s according to the following schedule:

Mondayat 8 a.m.

Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Thursdayat 8 a.m.

Thursdayat 7 p.m.

Sunday at 9 a.m.

Classes last approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. There is no preregistration for these classes. It costs $4 per class if you “pay as you go” or you can buy a 20 class pass for $60. This pass can be purchased in the Recreation Office at Village Hall or the Cluett Hall office. For further information, please call Cluett Hall between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 742-4905.

INTERVIEW DATES FOR SUMMER POOL EMPLOYMENT

The Recreation Department is announcing the start of a series of interviews for summer jobs at the Garden City Pool. If you enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make a commitment to be a part of a team that works hard to provide quality facilities to our residents, we’d like to meet you!.

If you are presently a high school junior or older and are looking for a great summer job, stop in the Recreation Office in Village Hall, pick up an application and make an appointment for an interview. Reminder: even if you were employed by the pool last year, you are still required to reapply and be interviewed for the upcoming season.

Interviews will be held at Village Hall on the following dates:

Saturday, January 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, January 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
