Varsity Girls Lacrosse continues momentum in week three

Garden City Varsity Girls Lacrosse continued its streak by adding two more victories in week three of Conference 1 play.  On Thursday, April 7th, the Lady Trojans faced off against non-league Farmingdale at home and won 8-5.  Two days later on Saturday, April 9th, the Lady Trojans won their fifth straight game to defeat top-ranked Wantagh in a nail-biting 8-7 victory at home.

Against Farmingdale, the eight goals were spread amongst the offense:  junior Marie Cacciabaudo (2G), eighth grader Regan Backer (2G), senior captain Caitlin McNaboe (1G), junior Katie Gaven (1G), junior Marie Cacciabaudo (1G), sophomore Kendal Morris (1G), senior Kristen Hegarty (3A), freshman Kyle Finnell (3A), and senior captain Carla Curth (1A).  The defensive backline held Farmingdale to only five goals led by senior Kasey Prybylski, junior Rory Heslin, sophomore Emily Romeo, and sophomore Mabel Overbeck.  Sophomore Niamh Pfaff and junior CeCe Van Blenis tended goal with a combined four saves.  They ended the non-league game with a win 8-5 over Farmingdale.

On Saturday, April 9th, the Lady Trojans faced the top-seeded Wantagh Warriors in a hard fought battle.  The Warriors scored early and often putting three points on the board within the first fifteen minutes of the game.  With almost eight minutes to go, Garden City would have its chance with a goal from freshman Kyle Finnell assisted by sophomore Kendal Morris to make the score 3-1 Wantagh.  Wantagh was unrelenting and quickly answered with another point to keep the gap 4-1. The Trojans came back again this time with a goal from senior Kristen Hegarty at the five minute mark to chip away at the Wantagh lead bringing the score to 4-2. The Warriors kept the attack on with two more goals widening their lead 6-2 Wantagh.  With just over a minute to go in the first half, the Lady Trojans put one more on the board once again by senior Kristen Hegarty.  They entered the half down three points at 6-3.  At the start of the second half, junior Marie Cacciabaudo started to chip away at the Wantagh lead with a goal.  Wantagh answered once again making the score 7-4 just five minutes into the half.  The Lady Trojans started to control the draw consistently and added four unanswered points with three goals by freshman Kyle Finnell and a goal by junior Marie Cacciabaudo. Defenders Kasey Prybylski, Rory Heslin, Mabel Overbeck and Emily Romeo kept Wantagh offense at bay, while senior goalies Amanda Grimes and sophomore Niamh Pfaff stayed sharp between the pipes stopping six shots when Wantagh was able to break through.  The score would remain 8-7 for the last six minutes of the game making this the Trojans’ fourth league win and fifth win in a row.

The Trojans now hold a 5-1 record and 4-0 in-league record as they head into the last week of play before Spring break.
