MISCHIEF AND MAYHEM: THE POLICE REPORT ANOTHER SLEEPING DRIVER: for the third time in recent months Garden City Police have arrested a driver asleep at the wheel of his car, with the car in gear. Police Officer Oswald and Sgt. Hickey arrested a Hempstead man, age 26, after he was observed to be sleeping behind the wheel of his car on Cathedral Avenue on October 10th. According to police, the man woke as the officers opened the door to his car and then refused to be handcuffed and pushed the officers. He was charged with DWI, resisting arrest, impeding traffic, aggravated unlicensed operation (for suspensions) and having no insurance. One of the officers was treated at Winthrop Hospital for numerous abrasions… POLICE OFFICERS investigating a suspicious vehicle in parking field 2S on September 29th arrested a 42 year-old Westbury woman after it was found she had an arrest warrant from the Village of Hempstead. According to police she was also allegedly in possession of crack cocaine… PO WALSH arrested a 38 year-old West Hempstead woman for allegedly shoplifting $93 worth of clothing and household goods from Sears on October 1st… MORE THEFTS FROM VEHICLES : Police recorded five larcenies from unlocked vehicles on October 6th. The cars were parked on Cambridge, Oxford, Middleton and Stewart. Items stolen include GPS devices, jewelry, loose change, a cell phone and sunglasses. ON OCTOBER 11TH police reported another theft from an unlocked car on Franklin Court. Toys and currency were taken. More cars were entered on Pine, Filbert and Garden Streets but nothing appeared to be missing… A HOME on 4th Street was burglarized on October 7th. A rear window had been pried open and the thief took currency. When checking nearby homes, police found two ripped window screens on a nearby home… IN THE EARLY MORNING hours of October 8th PO Oswald noticed a driver pass a red light on Franklin Avenue and then stop in the intersection. After investigation, police charged the driver with felony DWI. The 39 year-old Queens Village man allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration of .16, and had a previous DWI conviction. He was also charged with passing a red light, uninsured and unsafe lane change… A DIAMONDBACK bicycle was stolen on Seventh Street. It was valued at $100… PO PUNCH arrested a 31 year-old Brentwood man for DWI on October 10th. According to police he had a BAC of .10. He was also charged with unsafe lane change, and uninsured operation… ON OCTOBER 11TH PO Milito arrested an East Meadow woman, age 53, for allegedly stealing two sweaters and a shirt from Lord and Taylor. Value was placed at $200…


FIREFIGHTERS assisted with the cleanup of a motor vehicle accident at Franklin and Stewart on October 7th… ANOTHER ACCIDENT the same day at Stewart and Franklin involved an overturned car. The occupants had gotten themselves out of the car, so firefighters assisted with making the scene safe and cleaning up spills… A TRASH FIRE on Euston Road was apparently caused by youths lighting newspapers on fire. The youths were not located…. WYATT ROAD residents noticed an odor of gas on October 7th, but no cause was found… PEOPLE AT Village Pediatrics noticed an odor of smoke on October 10th, but no cause was found… FIREFIGHTERS helped drivers in a motor vehicle accident on Hilton and 5th Street on October 10th… THE FIRE DEPARTMENT assisted an Ash Street homeowner who was locked out of the home on October 10th… A PROPANE barbecue grill fire was put out by fire fighters on October 12th at Willow Street…. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT also responded to two carbon monoxide alarms and four automatic alarms during the week.
