I remember the time when Garden City’s Franklin Avenue was called the Fifth Avenue of Long Island and the street signs proclaimed it. We had Sak’s 5th Avenue, Lord & Taylor, Franklin Simon, Oppenheim Collins, and many other fine stores. Many of them are no longer with us as the buying trend left them behind. Then we became the Wall Street of Long Island with banks and investment firms flooding into town. At the present time we are becoming the Restaurant Row of Long Island with many and varied restaurants in town. We now have two new ones with us –

“Taste” on Franklin off of Seventh Street and “The Wild Fig” on Franklin just North of Stewart Avenue. With all these good places to dine, it is no wonder that we have so many exercise classes in town. Oh well – Bon Appetite!

Many of you in town play tennis, and I have a great story of one of the teams in the Senior Men’s Country Club League. The men from Cherry Valley visited the Shelter Rock Tennis Club #2 and They expected a close match with that team, but were surprised by the size of their victories. Woody Horn and Jim Healy triumphed 6-2, 6-1 and Herb Hummers and Marty Dehier ran off six winning games. Bob Caliari had a struggle, but came through at the end of the match. Watching the play was their Chief – Chuck Vassoll and both he and the whole Cherry Valley Club were very proud of these gentlemen.

If you are looking for a different place to go on Long Island I have a good spot for you and it would be good for all ages including children. It’s the Long Island Maritime Museum just south of Montauk Highway (27A) in West Sayville. On Saturday, July 14th, they will be having a Vintage Boat Show and Old Timers’ Regatta as well as their usual display of historic boats, the Bayman’s Cottage and much more. You might also meet a Garden City neighbor there as a nember of Garden City folks are members, such as Elizabeth and Mark Westfield. Try it – you will like it.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Nickie McGuire, who will be doing her celebrating on July 8th. May she have a wonderful day with a great year to follow and enjoy it all in health and happiness.

Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Lorraine and Frank Tauches, who will do their celebrating on July 10th and to Arlyn and George Rath who will also be celebrating just around the same time. May both happy couples have a wonderful anniversary and may they have many more years in which to enjoy each other in good health and with much happiness.

Herb Polak is now taking therapy on the North Shore and we all hope for his return home in the near future. Do send him a Get Well card as when you are in a cheered state of mind, you do recover faster.

Garden City lost another lovely lady this past week with the passing of Marjorie Robinson. She was an active member of the Cathedral of The Incarnation and also active in the Community Club of Garden City. While she was a new member, she jumped in and accepted the position of Chairlady of Decorations for the club and had filled her committee and was looking forward to the upcoming Fall season. She will be missed by all who knew her and our sympathy goes out to her loved ones and her family.

As usual, I didn’t like to leave you in a sad mood especially in the summer so here goes.

Teacher to little Johnny: How do you spell “crocodile”?

Little Johnny to teacher: Krokodial

Teacher: No, that’s wrong.

Johnny: Maybe it’s wrong, but you asked me how I spell it! That’s all for now folks – see you at the pool.
