Secy. of Homeland Security to give Adelphi commencement address

Adelphi University will confirm graduates at the associate, bachelor, master and doctoral levels during its 118th Commencement on Monday, May 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale.

Jeh Charles Johnson will deliver the Commencement address and be recognized with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

Jeh Charles Johnson was sworn in on December 23, 2013, as the fourth Secretary of Homeland Security. Prior to joining DHS, Secretary Johnson served as General Counsel for the Department of Defense, where he was part of the senior management team and led the more than 10,000 military and civilian lawyers across the Department. As General Counsel of the Defense Department, Secretary Johnson oversaw the development of the legal aspects of many of our nation’s counterterrorism policies, spearheaded reforms to the military commissions system at Guantanamo Bay in 2009, and co-authored the 250- page report that paved the way for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2010.

Secretary Johnson graduated from Morehouse College in 1979 and received his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1982. He served on the Board of Trustees at Adelphi University from 2001 to 2005.

Additionally, Fabiola Milford, D.D.S., a dentist and clinical instructor in the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care at New York University, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and Edward Villella, a renowned ballet dancer, founder of the Miami City Ballet and currently a board member of the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.

Ruth (Bronfman) Marcus ’64 will receive the Ruth S. Harley Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award at the Commencement ceremony.
