The Garden City Renegades 6th grade team opened their 2008 season by hosting a very competitive Duxbury, Massachusetts team at St. Paul’s on March 29th. The game was significant in many ways. Not only was it the first Renegades game played on our a “home” field in Garden City but it also was a prelude to a great afternoon of lacrosse culminating in the Renegades and Duxbury teams together watching Duke play Dartmouth at Mitchell Field.

The Renegades played their usual style of aggressive, unselfish play on offense and their tenacious defense which allowed them to outscore minimized their opponents scoring chances resulting in a 7-5 victory. The Duxbury coach, Rob Roy Quinzani, was very complementary of the caliber of play, sportsmanship and hospitality exhibited by the Renegades.

After the game both teams enjoyed a mini-tailgate party of pizza, chips, brownies and soda and the Garden City Players players got to spend time with some new lacrosse buddies from the north. The teams received T-shirts commemorating the event which were worn proudly at school both here and in Duxbury, Mass.

Coach Quinzani invited the Renegades to join his team to watch his older son Max, an star attackman at Duke, play Dartmouth later that afternoon. The Duke-Dartmouth game was part one of the Lacrosse for Autism seriesa series of NCAA games, originated to raise funds and awareness for Lacrosse for Autism and the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. and the The Renegades were happy to attend. The Renegades, with the generous support of family and friends, purchased over 200 tickets to the game which benefitted the Lacrosse for Autism foundation. After watching the game with their new friends the Renegades had the chance to meet Duke stars Max Quinzani, Matt Danowski, Zack Greer, and Terence Molinari who graciously spent time with the boys and signed autographs and many other Duke Blue Devils.

The day embodied everything the Renegades try to instill in its players- competition, sportsmanship, camaraderie, community, and service.
