Public Meeting To Discuss Water Contamination

The USEPA has scheduled a public meeting for Tuesday March 6, 7PM at Garden City Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue in conjunction with a 30-day comment period on the Proposed Plan and preferred remedy to address groundwater contamination affecting Garden City Public Supply wells from the Fulton Avenue Superfund Site in Garden City Park. Site-related documents are available for review at the Garden City Public Library. Representatives from the four property owners associations are urged to attend in addition to interested residents. The topic pertains only to the contaminated plume of groundwater underlying the western portion of Garden City that was traced to the Fulton Avenue Superfund Site. The Hilton Avenue wells were recently shut down due to contamination from a different source, and the groundwater contamination affecting the Clinton Avenue Garden City Public wells is being investigated separately. The issues of groundwater contamination and other environmental concerns are monitored by the Village of Garden City’s Environmental Advisory Board.

The Garden City Environmental Advisory Board, which was established in 1992 to address evnvironmental concerns as directed by the Trustees has not held a formal meeting for over a year. A meeting was attempted in November 2006, but it was discovered that several members had resigned and no quorum was available. During the informal November meeting, Chairman Brudie advocated resumption of the use of DDT as a pesticide, but declined interest in having the EAB monitor the “HUB” since there was a separate Mayors Committee assigned to that issue. The re-constituted Garden City Environmental Advisory Board skipped the December 2006 meeting, due to the holidays and the meeting orginally scheduled for January 2007 was cancelled, although Hal Hecken, with the Mayor’s Hub Committee had agreed to attend and discuss his role. The EAB Chairman, Trustee Don Brudie, also cancelled the Februrary 2007 meeting and has not announced a March meeting date, only advising that it may be scheduled when convenient. The Garden City Environmental Advisory Board, established in 1992, has not issued an annual report for several years. Environmental matters historically monitored by the Garden City Environmental Advisory Board included open and green space, Aircraft noise and safety, the LIRR – third rail, railroad crossing elimination and freight shipments, groundwater contamination, breast cancer, and development of the Mitchel Field “HUB” complex.
