THANK YOU GARDEN CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT
Writing on behalf of the Garden City Community, I wish to thank Fire Chief John Casey and the members of the Garden City Fire Department for conducting the beautiful 5th year anniversary ceremony of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It was a very moving experience and assisted many of us to get through that difficult day.
RENOVATIONS OF THE GARDEN CITY AND NASSAU BOULEVARD LIRR STATIONS COMPLETED
Earlier this week I was pleased to join Senator Hannon and the MTA/LIRR Acting President Raymond P. Kenny at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Garden City and Nassau Boulevard Long Island Rail Road Stations. They are very attractive and serve as both a gateway for those who enter our Village via the Long Island Railroad as well as a welcome amenity by those who use the railroad in their daily commute.
In 2004 Senator Hannon secured funding in the MTA’s 2220-2004 Capital Plan to finance the restoration of these stations. In addition, the Estates Property Owners’ Association donated a beautiful cupola and weathervane for the Nassau Boulevard Station.
MORE ON ACTING NOW TO BE
PREPARED FOR HURRICANE SEASON
In an earlier column, I shared some suggestions on how to secure your property in preparation for a hurricane. The following are additional recommendations on what you can do now to be prepared in the event that a major storm hits Long Island.
+ Most importantly, advise the Police Department (465-4100) now if someone in your family uses life support equipment.
+ Put together a family hurricane kit.
+ Have a battery powered radio or television available (check the batteries)
+ Keep a flashlight handy for each member of the family with plenty of extra batteries
+ Store a supply of canned food with a manual can opener. Don’t forget about your pets.
+ Keep a non-electric telephone in your home – the phone lines often times remain operational even during power outages.
Please take these suggestions seriously they can save your life.
RAILROAD PARKING PERMITS
Beginning September 18, 2006, the Village will begin issuing Railroad Parking Permits for the year 2006/07. The annual fee is $75.00.
Permits may be obtained at the Village Business Office, 351 Stewart Avenue. Residents who already possess a 2005/06 permit will receive a renewal application by mail which may be returned to the Village either by mail or in person. A photocopy of your registration MUST accompany your application and check. Current permits will be valid through September 30.
CONSTITUTION WEEK – SEPTEMBER 17 – 23
The Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has asked me to proclaim the week of September 17 through 23 as “Constitution Week” in Garden City.
Our nation’s Constitution, adopted September 17, 1787, provided a fundamental document for freedom and independence, which has become a way of life in our great nation. All of us have cause to pause and reflect on our heritage. Residents are urged to fly the flag all week in observance.
PARKING FIELD 7S – CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Preparation work for the final repaving continues. Please take particular care in parking by the respective tree pits as the newly installed granite blocks are higher than they will be when the field is repaved and can damage your car.
