Local Student Studying In London

Timothy McLaughlin, of Garden City, is currently studying in London, England as part of an off-campus program of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. designed for students from a variety of disciplines.

The program in London is one of the oldest international programs sponsored by the Colleges. It is offered in collaboration with The Foundation for International Education (FIE), and is designed to provide students with a variety of academic and cultural experiences in one of the world’s leading cities. The centerpiece of this program is a required internship with a local business, agency or organization.

Through this experience and related coursework McLaughlin will gain an understanding of historical London as well as the city’s evolution as a modern, multicultural city. He is living in a flat with shared bath and kitchen facilities in central London, traveling on public transportation including the underground (the “Tube”) and bus, and experiencing daily life as a Londoner. He is also taking excursions in and around London relating to the content covered in one of the British Life and Culture courses.

As Europe’s largest city, with a population just under eight million, London is much more diverse than one might expect. While it is home to well-known tourist attractions like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, it is also home to a population that speaks about 200 different languages. London’s Bond Street has been a center for world commerce far longer than Wall Street, and the British media industry-from the BBC to “fringe” magazines to the London Times-influence political and social debate worldwide.
