Library offers unique programming for adults in April


Garden City Public Library Adult Programming is offering something for everyone! Take a defensive driving course to receive a reduction on your automobile insurance and qualify for a license point reduction, hear from Art Historian Vivian Gordon about European art lost before and at the time of World War II, join Librarians Kristen Sweeney and Laura Giunta for a lively book discussion, and more during April.

 

Defensive Driving course with Empire Safety Council

Join us on Saturday, April 2, 10AM-4PM for a Defensive Driving Course with the Empire Safety Council. Receive 10 percent reduction on automobile/liability insurance and qualify for a licensed point reduction. In-person registration at the Garden City Public Library began March 7. The first three weeks of registration is limited to Garden City Public Library cardholders only; only a few spots remain! Those without a Garden City Public Library card can begin registering on Monday, March 28. Register separately for each person. Proper ID is required when registering an absentee party. You must bring a $30 check made payable to Empire Safety Council and current Library card with you to register. Bring your valid New York State driver’s license and a pen to class.

 

“Beyond the Monuments Men: The Ongoing Story of Looted Art”

with Vivian Gordon (A Long Island Reads Program)

As part of Long Island Reads, join us on Wednesday, April 13, 2PM on Zoom for the Program “Beyond the Monuments: The Ongoing Story of Looted Art” with Art Historian Vivian Gordon. European art lost before and at the time of World War II has continued to be the subject of museum exhibitions, books and films. This talk will discuss recent claims for works by Pissarro, van Gogh, Cézanne, Klimt, Matisse and others looted from their former owners. Art Historian Vivian Gordon, formerly with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will present an illustrated discussion. This program will be held on Zoom. Registration is required and begins Monday, March 28 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org) or in person at the Garden City Public Library. An email with the Zoom link will be sent prior to the program. This program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

 

Book Chats with Kristen Sweeney & Laura Giunta:

The Living and the Lost by Ellen Feldman (A Long Island Reads Program)

The Library will be hosting a Book Chats book discussion on Tuesday, April 26 at 2PM to chat about the book The Living and the Lost by Ellen Feldman, which is this year’s Long Island Reads book selection. Read the book and then join Librarians Kristen Sweeney and Laura Giunta for a book discussion. About the book: “Living and working in a bombed-out Berlin, Millie Mosbach must come to terms with a past decision made in a moment of crisis with the help of a mysterious man who is surprisingly understanding of her demons.” Registration is required and begins Monday, April 4 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org) or in person at the Garden City Public Library. Registrants can pick up the book at the Reference Department at the Library after registering.
