Tails and Tales Tweens and Teens Summer Reading Club:

Registration is Underway!

Registration began on Monday, June 21 for the Tweens and Teens “Tails and Tales” Summer Reading Club!  This program is for tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021 only. Tweens and teens can register online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Registrants can pick up their Summer Reading Club Bags and free YA books in the Tweens and Teens Room while supplies last.

 Once you sign-up, you can submit raffle entries for each book you read at the Library or online through our website (www.gardencitypl.org).Tweens and teens who submit one raffle entry will have a chance to win one of this year’s raffle prizes. All books must be at the appropriate reading level and be read and reviewed between June 21 and July 30. Registration is ongoing until Friday, July 30. Raffle entries must be submitted no later than Friday, July 30. This year’s raffle prizes include:

  • $50 Gift Card to Amazon
  • $50 Gift Card to Starbucks
  • Popcorn Machine
  • $50 Gift Card to TCBY
  • $50 Gift Card to Dunkin Donuts
  • $50 Gift Card to Target
  • Plus a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card will be awarded to the tween or teen who reads the most books!​

The more books you read and the more reviews you enter, the more chances you have to win!

Tails and Tales! Tweens and Teens Creative Arts Contest

Get creative this summer by entering our Tweens and Teens Creative Arts Contest!

There will be two categories for the Contest: Writing and Art. Tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021 can submit up to 3 entries per category. There will be a winner for each category. Each winner will receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card. Participants’ work should relate to the “Tails and Tales” theme. Submissions began being accepted in person at the library on Monday, June 21. The deadline to submit is Friday, July 23. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, August 4. Entries should be created between June 21-July 23. Each entry must include the Contest Submission Form, which can be picked up at the Library.

Message Cards for Community Service

Earn community service by creating positive messages for Garden City Public Library patrons! Each volunteer will receive 10 message cards to color, decorate, and write positive or library/book themed messages. These message cards will be placed in books throughout the library in order to brighten the day of the patrons who check them out. Messages will be placed in books in all three departments, including Children’s, Tweens and Teens, and Adult Reference.To participate, please register online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). While weeks one, two, and three are completed, volunteers can register once each week for the remainder of the five weeks as follows:

  • Registration Week Four: Monday, July 19 at 10AM to Friday, July 23 at 4PM
  • Registration Week Five: Monday, July 26 at 10AM to Friday, July 30 at 4PM 

Message cards should be returned no later than Friday, August 6 at 4PM.

Registrants will be asked to pick up their message cards at the library in order to participate in this community service program. Volunteers must return 10 completed message cards in order to receive community service. Volunteers will receive 2 hours for every 10 message cards they submit, at the discretion of the Tweens and Teens Department. This program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

Tree Ornaments for Community Service: Fish Ornaments

Earn community service by painting ornaments for the Garden City Public Library’s Tweens and Teens Department’s Tree Ornament! Each volunteer will receive 3 ornaments and a set of paint pens to decorate their ornaments at home. Paint pens must be returned to the library. These ornaments will be used to decorate our new ornament tree each month! 

For the month of July, the ornaments will be fish-shaped. Registration begins Tuesday, July 20 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Completed ornaments must be returned by July 29 to the Library. 

Registrants will be asked to pick up their ornaments at the library in order to participate in this community service program. Volunteers must return 3 decorated ornaments and their set of paint pens in order to receive community service. Volunteers will receive 2 hours for every 3 ornaments they submit, at the discretion of the Tweens and Teens Department. This program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

Teen Games: Scattergories

See if you fill-in all the categories before time runs out during the program Teen Games: Scattergories on Monday, July 19, 5PM-5:45PM! This program is for tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021. Registration began Tuesday, July 13 online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Space is limited, so check Eventkeeper for availability. Teens who complete an online survey after the program can receive community service for participating in this program. 

Teen Crafternoon: “Nailed It” Art Challenge

See if you can beat the clock and finish your paintings during the program Teen Crafternoon: “Nailed It!” Art Challenge on Tuesday, July 20, 5PM-5:45PM! Participants will have four mini canvases and be asked to make four paintings based on a specific theme within the time limit. This program is for tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021. Registration began Tuesday, July 13 online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Space is limited, so check Eventkeeper for availability. This program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Teens who complete an online survey after the program can receive community service for participating in this program. 

Teen Games: Among Us

Can you figure out who the Imposter is? Find out during the program Teen Games: Among Us on Thursday, July 22, 4PM-4:45PM! Registrants will need to bring their own device and the Among Us game downloaded onto the device in order to play. This program is for tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021. Registration began Tuesday, July 13 online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Space is limited, so check Eventkeeper for availability. Teens who complete an online survey after the program can receive community service for participating in this program. 

Teen Games: Pictionary

Use your drawing skills during the program Teen Games: Pictionary on Monday, July 26, 5PM-5:45PM! This program is for tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021. Registration begins Tuesday, July 20 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Teens who complete an online survey after the program can receive community service for participating in this program. 

Teen Crafternoon: DIY Drawstring Canvas Backpacks

Use fabric markers, acrylic markers, or sharpies to design your own backpacks during the program Teen Crafternoon: DIY Canvas Drawstring Backpacks on Tuesday, July 27, 5PM-5:45PM! This program is for tweens and teens entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021. Registration begins Tuesday, July 20 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). This program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Teens who complete an online survey after the program can receive community service for participating in this program. 

Tween Trivia

Test your trivia knowledge during the program Tween Trivia on Thursday, July 29, 4PM-4:45PM. This program is for tweens entering Grades 4-7 in Fall 2021.  Registration begins Tuesday, July 20 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). Space is limited, so check Eventkeeper for availability. Tweens entering Grades 6 and 7 in Fall 2021 who complete an online survey after the program can receive community service for participating in this program.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting

The next meeting of the Teen Advisory Board is Tuesday, August 3, 5PM-5:40PM. The meeting is for Tweens and Teens in Grades 6-12. Registration begins Tuesday, July 27 at 10AM online via Eventkeeper (www.gardencitypl.org). 

If you are interested in helping to come up with programming ideas, volunteer ideas,  or social media outreach ideas for tweens and teens in Grades 6-12, consider joining the Teen Advisory Board Online applications are available at www.gardencitypl.org/teen-advisory-board-application/  Applicants should be entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2021.

Social Media Challenges for July

For the month of June, participate in our social media challenges to earn community service credit! July’s challenges are as follows:

  • Art: Make a piece of art related to the “Tails and Tales” theme

 

  • Writing: Write a story, poem, or essay related to the “Tails and Tales” theme 
  • Food: Make a dish featuring ice cream
  • Question of the Month: What is your favorite book you have read this last year and why?
  • Reading: Read a book related to the “Tails and Tales” theme

 

If you participate in the challenges, earn community service credit by submitting so we can share it on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

Volunteer Teen Reviewers Needed

Would you like to be a reviewer for the Library? Need community service hours? Then become a Volunteer Teen Reviewer. This program is for tweens and teens in Grades 6-12. The Library is looking for teen reviewers to review books and media in the YA collection as well as digital content, such as ebooks and audiobooks, available on Nassau Digital Doorway. There might be a book you’ve already read in our physical or digital collection that you can write a review on! 

Reviews will be used to update the Tweens and Teens Library Review Page (www.gardencitypl.org/category/teen-reviews/) as well as update our social media pages. Reviews are subject to approval by the Young Adult Librarian. Please make sure to follow the guidelines for reviews in order for the review to count toward community service. 

Teen-Created Social Media Content

Earn community service by submitting a photo, video, or other content for us to add to the Library’s Tweens and Teens Facebook and Instagram pages! Ideas for submissions include book reviews, artwork, poetry, short stories, personal essays, photos of food you’ve cooked or baked, or any other creative idea you have for content. Not all submissions will be used on our social media and submissions including photos of people are not allowed. Submit social media content here www.gardencitypl.org/social-media-submission/.
