2021 is almost over but Garden City Community Church (GCCC) is not yet letting the year end without celebrating the season of Advent.  The sanctuary is decorated, the Christmas trees are lit, the greens are hung, the bells are waiting to chime, and all are ready as we wait for the coming of Jesus Christ.  “The birth of Jesus happened exactly at the right moment in history, in The Fullness of Time.  This marvelous event – carefully prepared for and orchestrated by God – unveiled the coming of Jesus, the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption for all people.”

This is the theme of Advent for all at GCCC and the community.  During this Advent season, GCCC members and friends are reading the Advent Devotional inspired by Henri J. Nouwen.  As GCCC waits, there are programs, services, events, and mission opportunities offered to help make the season meaningful.

Rev. Lynn Sullivan, the Senior Pastor of GCCC, began Advent studies on December 1st at 8:00 p.m. via zoom.  Each Wednesday night will be moment of reflecting on Advent and Sabbath.  December 1st focused on Waiting and Planning.  Advent is a time of waiting and a time of planning. We looked at the scriptures of people who learned to wait and discover times in our own lives that we too were in a period of waiting.  For information how to join in the studies, email the church at churchoffice@thegccc.org or call 516-746-1700.

Week two, December 8th,  will be reflections on Solitude and Meditation: Advent, like Lent is a time of meditation and prayer. We will discover ways we too can find solitude, even during  the busiest time of the year. Week three,  December 15th, we will gather for Reunions: Bethlehem was teeming with people returning home for the census. We can find this time of year, reuniting with our loved ones, a sacred time of blessings and challenges.

The Christmas Tree Sale will be held on Saturday, December 4th from 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This year GCCC youth will be selling trees as well as wreaths and garland! Please spread the word to family, and friends, and come to support our mission trip fundraiser!  New hats and mittens will be collected for the guests of the Long Island Council of Churches.  Donation of gifts for the children at Nueva Vida Presbyterian Church, for the children of mothers at the Bedford Hill Facility, and new coats for the children of Anna House.

Mission will not be complete without worship services.  Join GCCC for the following Advent and Christmas services:

  • Sundays at 10:30 a.m.  Sanctuary (Live-stream)
  • Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. Prayer Service
  • Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m.  Advent Study (Zoom)

These are how GCCC celebrates Advent and Christmas to prepare for the real meaning of  sharing with others the blessings we have.  True to our purpose, we are the church that is “Building a community where all are enriched through Christian Love, Service, and Spiritual Renewal.”  Our vision is “Faithfully Reaching Out, Inclusively Drawing In.”
