New Senior Center Construction Update

It finally happened! At the July 23rd Trustees meeting, by a vote of 6-0 (two trustees were absent), bids were accepted for separate jobs — one for outside work, and one for the interior. Both bidders, we were told, are ready to start. But first there are various requirements which precede actual construction. These steps could take several weeks, say, to the end of August. Once begun, the job is estimated to be completed in 120 WORKING days (excluding weekends and holidays). Thus a best guess now is completion in 2016. This assumes an early September start. Finally, it was encouraging at the Trustees meeting to learn that the two firms that will be awarded the job have been fully researched with respect to financial health, any litigation, and references from their clients.

About the Garden City Retired Men’s

Club

All Garden City men, 55 years and older, are eligible for membership.

The annual fee is a modest $10. The Club is non-sectarian and non-political. The main club meetings are on Mondays, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. A less formal meeting is on Thursdays — noon to 5 p.m. meetings will be at St. Paul’s.

Senior Center on Rockaway Ave. until the new center is ready for occupancy — now projected at early 2016.

The Club offers a large screen TV, card games (bridge, poker, cribbage), chess, backgammon, and billiards. During construction, billiards are available to RMC members, Mon to Friday from 1 – 5 p.m. at the GC Casino — in the rear room. There is a monthly speaker plus periodic trips and social events. Recently, the Club has instituted a “chat” area of the Clubhouse for informal conversation with existing and new members. This is intended to appeal to members who are not interested in card games, billiards, etc., and just seek socializing.

During the current expansion and renovation at Golf Club Lane, some of activities have been suspended until the new Senior Center is ready.

These suspended activities include: guest speakers, large-screen TV, social room and hot lunches.
