Speaker Chris Herren

This very important community event was sponsored by The Jamie and Paige Malone Foundation, the GC Community Coalition and the GC PTA. On Tuesday night, Chris Herren spoke to a packed auditorium at the Garden City High School about his life, the promise of a career in the NBA and how it all was lost to a life of drug addiction, homelessness and near death. He shared his story of his harrowing descent into addiction, a miraculous recovery and his new life mission: to share his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in their life.

Mr. Herren began The Herren Project in 2011 to increase education and public awareness on the dangers of substance abuse and to assist one person, one family at a time through a combination of treatment navigation, educational initiatives, mentoring, and public awareness. Mr. Herren also spoke to all of our high school students (grades 9-12) on Wednesday.

Who We Are

Since 1945, the Garden City Parent Teacher Association has worked toward bettering the lives of every child in education as well as health, and safety. Today’s GCPTA is a network of 3,000 families, students, teachers, and administrators devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of family engagement in each of our seven schools. Together we are a powerful voice for all our children, a relevant resource for our families and our community, as well as a strong advocate for public education.

PTA volunteers spend countless hours working to enhance our school district. Through our annual membership drives and fundraising efforts we are able to support cultural programs, speaker engagements, awards to high school students, health and safety programs; all of which have become longstanding traditions to our schools and our students. Our grants to the district have augmented the educational experience for all students. Many of the positive changes in our district have come from a collaborative effort among the parents, teachers and administrators of our district.
