The clashing of weapons could be heard in the high school gym this past Saturday 1/10 as the Boys and Girls Garden City Fencing teams faced Hewlett, Wheatley and Oyster Bay in their season’s first “quad” meet. The girl’s team was victorious over all three opponents: Hewlett 22 to 5, Wheatley 22 to 5 and Oyster Bay 18 to 9. Victory for the boy’s team came in the first part of the day over Hewlett 21 to 6, and Wheatley 22 to 5 while a third and final meet late in the afternoon against Oyster Bay saw Garden City lose in a close 13 to 14 decision.

Garden City is proud to boast several recent county and individual fencing championships. This tradition of success goes back several years as Garden City has long been known in the fencing community as a force to be reckoned with. In addition, many of our fencers, past and present have successfully pursued fencing careers in the college arena at Division I schools such as Brown, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Duke, Boston College and Penn State. Current high school seniors will be fencing for the likes of Duke and Sacred Heart in the fall. Several current and past graduates are highly ranked members of the elite fencing world and have competed at such prestigious competitions as the Junior Olympics, Empire State Games, Summer Nationals and the North Atlantic Circuit.

Due to increased interest in the sport over the past several years, an intramural program was established this season at the Middle School to promote and support the Varsity Garden City Fencing Team. Congratulations to both the girls and boys teams. Support from the local community is always appreciated in this often overlooked Garden City Sport. Meet schedules can be found on the Garden City website under athletics. The high school fencing season runs through the second week of February.
