Friend Raising Funds For Mobility System

Bart Brophy, a 1978 graduate of Garden City High School who became a quadriplegic during a lacrosse game at SUNY Brockport, does not let his disability stop him from helping others.

After going through a lengthy rehabilitation period, Brophy graduated from Suffolk Community College. It is during his job search that he saw the challenges he, and anyone in a wheelchair, have to face on a daily basis.

Brophy has since become an advocate for the physically challenged. He was the head of disability coordination at Grumman. After he moved to South Carolina, he fought to make 26 miles of beaches on Hilton Head Island wheelchair accessible. South Carolina Governor David Beasley appointed him to the state’s independent living council.

Brophy’s friend Bill Bolton is trying to raise $23,000 to purchase an iBot Mobility System for him. The Independence iBot 4000 Mobility System allows users to go places and do things not possible with other mobility devices. It can climb steps, stairs and curbs up to five inches high.

“It is the most sophisticated change in mobility for people with disabilities,” Brophy said. “I believe people with disabilities need the most powerful assistive technology available to be productive.”
