Farewell and good-by to a hero

To the Editor:

I promised to myself that nothing would jeopardize or stand on the way to prevent me from taking part and honoring the memory (although far away) at the funeral of NYPD officer Wenjian Liu. My wish was to travel to Brooklyn, to be present and able to silently look at the hearse and to say: ‘Thank you officer Liu from the bottom of my heart. You have my respect and profound gratitude. You will not be forgotten’.

Unfortunately, my physical condition impaired such strong desire and in the privacy of my home, I watched the very impressive, emotional, sad and yet brilliant ceremony. I always thought that I could control my inner emotions but in this solemn occasion, I simply failed. When the hearse appeared through the funeral parlor door, I followed my instinct, my inner wish and just like the thousands of police officers standing stoically in the rain, I raised myself from the couch stood firm and saluted while an emotionally charged tear slowly slid down my cheek. My Army past came handy on this occasion. My heart also shivered for his brave widow, Pei Xia Chen who among tears and voice of profound sorrow, was able to transmit to the audience her love and total devotion toward her bygone husband and hero. Once again, I wish to transmit my deep sorrow to his/her family and extended family the NYPD. We will remember and love you, Officer Liu.
