Democracy at Work??

To the Editor:

I attended the board of trustees meeting the other night on Thursday, September 19th and one of the agenda topics was a vote by the board to give an additional $625,000 on top of the original $1 million allotted to the stabilization of the St. Paul’s building. These monies now add up to approximately $6 million spent on maintenance and consultants for this 148-year-old, 200,000 sq.ft., 500 room decaying wood framed structure over the last 25 years this on top of the initial $5 million purchase price. While we the taxpayers can only look forward to additional money outlays moving forward.

I was particularly annoyed by the lack of any information regarding the need for these additional funds and the boards cavalier attitude towards anyone who spoke out against this project. We were told it was their decision and apparently nothing the public said would sway them from their intended goals. We were also told that the village was in good financial condition with a small debt balance when compared with other villages. I guess this is why the board seems to have no compunction in spending $1,625,000 for the first of the three stages of this St. Paul’s project (stabilization). The next two stages have yet to be discussed so far and no price tags have been tallied.

What a waste!
