A contingent of boys from the Men and Boys Choir of the Cathedral of the Incarnation made their way to Canada for the annual Montreal Boys’ Choir Course/ For its 50th Anniversary year, the RSCM Montreal Boys’ Choir Course had a musically challenging and fun-filled week in the beautiful location of Bishop’s College School, Lennoxville, near Sherbrooke, Québec. Bishop’s College School is a private boarding and day school for grades seven (7) through pre-university (12) The location had very nice facilities, including music rooms, great food and spacious accommodations. It was an excellent year for the course and the musical quality was excellent. The course ran from August 1st to August 8th, 2010. The boys then sang a Choral Mass and a service of Evensong on August 8 to culminate their participation in the course.
There was a talented group of boys and great direction from Guest Music Director Malcolm Archer, FRSCM, Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, England. He trains and conducts the Quiristers and Chapel Choir and teaches organ and composition in the College. He has enjoyed a distinguished career in cathedral music, which has taken him to posts at Norwich, Bristol, Wells Cathedrals and then Director of Music at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. During his time there he directed the choir for several State services, including the Tsunami Memorial Service, the London Bombings Service and the 80th Birthday Service for HM The Queen, for which he was invited by Buckingham Palace to compose a special anthem, performed live on BBC 1. His many broadcasts and recordings from Wells and St. Paul’s have received critical acclaim, and his CD of Christmas music from St. Paul’s was voted Editor’s number one choice in The Daily Telegraph.
The boys in the choir who were given the opportunity to attend the course this year were Ian Scott, Erik Thorstenn, Sam Newman, and Jack Fishman. The men in the choir who also attended were Rich Scillia, Matt Tamke, Stephen Tamke, and Josh Littlefield.
