A Word From The Publisher

Take Your Time, Kate

We were glad to see that Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has assured the Eastern Property Owners Association that the town will examine the proposal of development of the Lighthouse project carefully before making any approvals.

The scope of the proposed development is huge, with 2300 residential units and 1.5 million square feet of office and retail space.

Charles Wang claims that the project is essential for the region’s economy, but given the depressed prices of homes and the burgeoning numbers of “For Lease” signs springing up in retail spaces throughout Nassau, we wonder if the project might in fact worsen conditions.

And then there are the obvious questions of what to do with all of the road congestion such a development might create, not to mention the environmental impacts of sewage disposal and water usage.

According to Newsday, which appears to be leading the cheerleading squad for the project, County Executive Tom Suozzi has asked Murray to expedite the approval process. We hope instead that she (and the town board) goes through the approval process with “deliberate speed” – with the emphasis on deliberation, not speed.
