GC Jewish Center Celebrates Purim

After a hard day playing games and earning tickets, it’s time for the prize table. After a hard day playing games and earning tickets, it’s time for the prize table. Purim came to the Garden City Jewish Center last week! This wild and fun Jewish holiday could be described as a mix of Mardi Gras, New Year’s Eve and Halloween. It celebrates the time each year that the Biblical heroine, Esther, saved her people from the King’s evil advisor, Haman, and is marked today with parties, triangle shaped cookies called hamantashen (his hat), costumes and noisemakers.

At the GCJC, more than 100 people came together for a Purim Pizza Party that was followed by the rollicking reading of the Scroll of Esther (or Megillah). Every time Haman’s name was mentioned in the story, 100 noisemakers were sounded along with booos and hisses, until Rabbi Stephen Goodman (dressed in the traditional wildly inappropriate cow costume) went around bopping people on the head with a plastic bopper. Special gift baskets of sweets and treats called shaloch manot were distributed to all the Congregation members.

Ready for Purim! Ready for Purim! The next morning, the annual Purim Carnival was held at the Religious school, which featured games, prizes, and food! Part of the fun was having the school Seniors and Confirmation students run the booths for the younger kids, and all the profits are donated to charity (also called Tzedakah).

The Religious School is a 3 hour Sundays-only program with a philosophy that learning should be hands-on and creative and as much fun as possible. Families often come from dual faith backgrounds and from many of the towns and communities surrounding Garden City.
