Trip to Clark Gardens on June 20th

Come join the Recreation Department as we visit Clark Botanic Gardens for a tour and tea. On June 20th, we will travel by Recreation bus to Clark Gardens, where the Head Horticulturist of Clark Gardens will discuss their beautiful botanic gardens and the recent impact of Hurricane Sandy and how it affected their garden, possible yours and others on Long Island. She will also suggest plantings and proven tips to help you with your garden for the future. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session and an escorted tour of the gardens. Tea and cookies will be provided. The cost of this trip is $10, payable in cash at the time of registration. To register, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Zumba Gold now registering

Classes will be held on Thursday
evenings at 6:45 pm or Tuesday mornings at 10:15 am. Each 45 minute class,
teaching the basics of Zumba, is led by
Felicia Lovaglio, our certified Zumba
instructor. This class is geared for
seniors or the beginner adult. Classes
will begin the week of June 18th.
Prices are as follows:
Tuesdays at 10:15 am - Seniors (65

Tuesday morning classes will be
held at Community Park's Tennis
Center.
Thursday night classes are held in

Our winter session of Yoga Connie McKnight will begin again according to the following schedule:

Mondays ,7:30 - 8:30 p.m. - 10 classes for $65.00 beginning June 3rd

Wednesdays 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. - 9 classes for $ 58.50 beginning June 5th

This program is open to adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The Wednesday morning class will meet in the Golf Club Lane Senior Center. The Monday evening class will meet in St. Paul's Senior Center. The class is geared towards the average person. Please make sure to bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. n 2nd evening yoga class added Department

Our Recreation is offering a second evening yoga class which will be taught by Connie McKnight. This class will take place in St. Paul's Senior Center on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm beginning June 19 and running until August 7th. The cost of this class will be $52. Adult evening tennis lessons

The Garden City Recreation
Department will conduct evening tennis lessons for adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City
at the Community Park Tennis
Facility. The lessons will run for one
hour each week in three sessions during the spring/summer months. The
registrant has a choice of a Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
class and a choice of time. There will
be a maximum of four players per
court. The dates and fees will be as follows: Session 1 - 6 weeks beginning May
13; Cost - 165
Session 2 - 4 weeks beginning July
8 ; Cost - $110
Session 3 - 4 weeks beginning
August 5; Cost - $110

St. Paul's senior center hours

St. Paul's Senior Center is open and
again running programs for seniors to
enjoy! The Center is open from 9 am to
4 pm, Mondays through Fridays, for
senior individuals to either participate
in the programs offered or to just sit,
relax and enjoy the setting. Our weekly schedule is as follows:

Registration begins for senior trips

The Recreation Department will sponsor the following trips for seniors who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City during the upcoming months. These trips were set up with the guidance of the Garden City Senior Advisory Committee.

Wednesday, June 5

Trip to Brotherhood Winery for tastings and lunch. We will travel upstate by coach bus to the Brotherhood Winery where we will take a tour of the winery, do a wine tasting, and have a wonderful lunch. The bus will leave St. Paul's Senior Center around 8 am and return around 5 pm. The cost of this trip will be $36, payable by check only to Brotherhood Winery at the time of registration.

Thursday, June 20

Trip to Clark Botanical Gardens (raindate, Friday, June 21). We will take the Recreation bus to the Gardens for a presentation by the Head Horticulturist, a light tea, and a garden stroll. We will then return home. The Gardens will be beautiful this time of year! The cost of this trip will be $10, payable in cash, at the time of registration.

Wednesday, August 14

Trip to Westbury Manor for lunch and a showing of "My Way" a Frank Sinatra tribute. The bus will leave St. Paul's Senior Center at 11:15 am and return to the Senior Center when the concert is over. The cost of a ticket is $25, payable by check only to Plaza Theatrical Productions, at the time of registration. This trip is subsidized by the Recreation Department.

Friday, October 11

Trip to the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park. We will have a tour and lunch at the world renowned university and enjoy the fall foliage on the way! Details as to time will be decided soon but if you want to attend this trip, come in and register! The cost of this trip will be $40 with a $25 non-refundable deposit due at the time of registration in a check made payable to The Culinary Institute. PLEASE NOTE, THIS TRIP IS NOW FILLED.

To register for any of these trips, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please note, once the fees are sent to the venues, they are not refundable so make your selections carefully. All trips are open senior residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City only.

Community resources for seniors

Seniors - find out what may be available to you! Winthrop-University Hospital is offering an informative seminar, “Community Resources for Seniors,” on Wednesday, June 12, at 1:15 PM. The program will be held at the Mineola Community Center, located at 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola (one block south of Jericho Turnpike, between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue), and will highlight community agencies who provide a wide variety of supportive services for seniors.

Linda Martinez, LMSW, from Winthrop’s Division of Geriatrics and Loretta Gambino, LMSW, from Winthrop Home Care, will introduce representatives from various agencies who will provide information on Elder Law, transportation, staying independent in your own home, life alert devices, home health aides, caregiver and case management services, assistant living, dementia care, respite care, and more. A question and answer period will follow the lecture. The program begins with the lecture at 1:15 PM and will be followed by blood pressure checks at 2:45 PM.

Health Update for Seniors is a free community health education program presented by Geriatric Health Services and the Winthrop Home Health Agency. For information on other programs at the Hospital, please call 1-866-WINTHROP.
