Clarification On Library Story

To the Editor:

I am interested in clarifying some additional points made in the article "Village Facing More Roof Issues-This Time, At Library," which was published in last week's issue.

First, to confirm that the $68,000 estimated amount, which has now been increased to $75,000 by village engineers, is for repairs not covered by the warranty.

The Library Board Budget Chairman Jack Pascal and newly appointed Building Chairman John Schultz met on Monday, January 16th with Village Engineer Craig Bandini, Village Trustee and Library Liaison Andrew Cavanaugh and Library Director Carolyn Voegler and reviewed the capital budget requests for the roof and the building. Also, Library Trustees including myself, mentioned the repairs at the various village POA meetings on January 17th. Therefore, this information had been provided prior to the budget hearing .

The Library Board itself questioned at the time we learned of the contract expiration why we were given such a short notice of the contract expiring. I have asked Library Trustee John Shultz, who now chairs the building committee, to review building contracts with the library director and the village engineers to make sure sufficient notification is provided going forward prior to the expiration of contracts.

As concerns the budget process, the Library Budget Committee of Chairman Jack Pascal and Barbara Brudie- Martis are scheduled to meet next week with representatives of the Citizens' Budget Review & Advisory Committee. The Library Board looks forward to a positive relationship this year between the two official bodies and not a repeat of past differences.

The budget number as reported in the article in comparison to the village contribution is a comparison of apples and oranges. The budget provides total expenses for the year. The contribution is a lower number and is net the budget amount less surplus and other revenues. The surplus applied to the budget last year from previous operations was $187,320 and revenues were approximately $85,000.

Sincerely,

J. Randolph Colahan

Chair, Library Board of

Trustees
