It’s February and only eleven days away from Valentine’s Day. I do hope that you have gotten something nice for your Mother, Wife, Girlfriend or just a really good friend. The shops right here in Garden City can help you with just about anything you or they might like. The parking is great and it takes a lot less of your time than going to a mall. So make your Valentine happy as well as yourself.
Happy birthday wishes go to Walter Fromann, who will be doing his celebrating on February 5th and also to Helen Roberts, who will be blowing out the candles on her cake on February 7th. May you both have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness with many more birthdays to come.
The Garden City Branch of the American Assoc. of University Women will present Donald X. Clavin, Receiver of Taxes - Town of Hempstead today, February 3rd at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Library. Mr. Clavin will speak about Assessments, Exemptions, Property Taxes and Taxpayers Rights. He will be happy to answer questions following the presentation. Margaret Delahunt is the Chairlady and Mary Knox will be happy to greet you at the door. This is a good chance to get your information first hand and I am just reminding you as the information was in last week’s paper.
Garden City long time resident, Charles Heinzelmann passed away last week following a long time illness. He took his illness with great patience and lived for and loved his wife Ann and his daughters and their families. He will be missed by all who knew him and our prayers and thoughts go to his loved ones in their time of sorrow.
Another passing that took everyone by surprise was the passing of Bob Rudkin also this past week. Bob, his wife Pauline and his family had also been long time residents of Garden City. Bob, a World War II Veteran, was active in the William Bradford Turner Post of the American Legion here in town. He held many of the Post Officers, including Post Commander and in fact, this past December he joined volunteers from the G.C. Post in taking Christmas giftstheyhadcollectedtotheVetsattheNorthportVAHospital. Bob passed away where he wanted to be - at home with his family. His contribution to this Village was mighty and our thoughts and prayers are with Pauline and the whole family in their time of sorrow. Bob will not be forgotten.
The ladies of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead are all set to bring in the month of February no matter what the weather is. They started off with a lecture about Mark Twian that told of his comedy and wit from his early days with full dramatized readings by David Houston as Twain, that had the large audience enthralled. Club members will follow up with a Flower Arranging Program workshop where they will all make a lovely centerpiece for their table. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. If you are looking for an active group to entertain you and even teach you do call the club office Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 746-0488 and the Secretary will give you the information about joining. They have lots of varied programs and the tours are also great.
My nominatin for unsung helper of the month would be Sheila Birkenstock. She is a helper par excellance whether at her church or at her club, Sheila is always ready to lend a helping hand. Its folks like that - ready to take someone who can no longer drive to church, meetings, shopping or just about anywhere they need to go. Folks like Sheila are all over Garden City and its what makes us such a homey town. If you know of another like her, write to me at the G.C. News as they should all have the thanks they deserve.
Hope you had a busy and interesting week as thats what life is all about - staying interested, helping others and making our own lives better by doing so. My thought for the week is: Those who bring sunshine to others cannot keep it from themselves. See you next week.
