Brian Daughney Brian Daughney Brian Daughney of Euston Road in the Estates section of the Village was selected by the Nominating Committee of the Estates POA to represent the Estates POA as Village Trustee in the election being held on January 31, 2012.

Daughney, a two year term present Trustee, stated “I believe there are important reasons to vote for me in next Tuesday’s election for the position of Estates’ POA Trustee. The election being held next Tuesday, January 31st is about the residents’ ability to rely on someone who is willing to make hard choices, to watch their tax dollars and preserve what residents like about Garden City while making changes to improve its future.

Mr. Daughney further stated that “I am happy that my opponent considers me too tough on those who do not want to change the way the Village spends your money or on those who want to waste your tax dollars. Don’t be fooled - “cooperative government” as a platform is code for agreeing with the Committee to Save St. Paul’s and its representatives on the Board.” He emphasized the election is about “smart and effective government.”

“Despite her attempts to run away from her association with the Committee to Save St. Paul’s and years of her promoting unfettered access to your tax dollars without a viable plan for its use, my opponent is running for one reason: to “cooperate” with the Committee to Save St. Paul’s in order to take control of the Board of Trustees.”

Mr. Daughney states that he has established a strong record of fiscal responsibility in the 2 short years he has been on the Village Board. “In my two years as a trustee, the Board of Trustees has passed two budgets with year over year increases of 1.7% and 0.4%. These increases were far less than the rate of inflation.”

Mr. Daughney pointed to several accomplishments:

As Trustee, I insisted that we require our administrative executive staff in the Village to pay for health benefits. That’s real money saved for taxpayers.

As President of the Estates POA, I was one of the driving forces in the re-establishment of the Citizens Budget Review and Advisory Committee, which was established to advise the Board of Trustees on the manner in which the Board establishes its budget and provide annual reports of suggestions to effect more efficiencies and cost savings for the Village.

As Trustee, following the suggestion of the Citizens Budget Committee, I spearheaded a review of the Village’s insurance policies that resulted in a cost savings of approximately $250,000 while achieving better coverage. That’s real money saved for taxpayers.

As Trustee, I have joined with several of my fellow Trustees to challenge our administrative staff to deliver services in a more fiscally prudent manner. In our last fiscal year, the Village achieved a surplus of approximately $2.2 million dollars. That’s real fiscal responsibility.

Mr. Daughney further commented:

“This election challenge isn’t about change, as my opponent suggests, to achieve fiscal responsibility. This is about obtaining her vote which is needed to push through the agenda of the Committee to Save St. Paul’s. It’s about stacking the deck so that a small but vocal group can spend your money without asking your permission. It’s about taking away your choices - your choice to address Garden City’s infrastructure (the water tower, our roads, our lighting system), your choice to improve our senior facilities and other recreation facilities and your choice to maintain appropriate levels of fire, police and sanitation personnel to keep Garden City as one of the most admired communities in the country. I am not beholden to any special interest group and will remain independent for as long as I am a trustee.”
