SUMMER’S END SENIOR PICNIC

The Garden City Recreation Department, in cooperation with D & J Refreshments and TCBY of Garden City, is proud to announce a special event for our resident seniors. On Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at noon our “Summers’ End Senior Picnic” will be held opposite the St. Paul’s Senior Center by the “Community Garden” and will include a full barbeque and a performance by The Back Roads Trio. All senior residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City are invited to attend. However, reservations are required and your reservation must be received by Friday September 16 in order to attend. Reservations can be made by calling the Recreation Office at 465-4075. Please join us as we bring the summer to an end and celebrate the beginning of autumn.

SENATOR KEMP HANNON VISITS ST. PAUL’S SENIOR CENTER

On Wednesday, September 14, Senator Kemp Hannon will come to St. Paul’s Senior Center at 12:45 pm to visit will our seniors and discuss topics pertinent to seniors and our Village. Please come to meet our Senator and to listen to this interesting discussion.

ADELPHI POOL MEMBERSHIP FOR ADULTS OFFERED

Adelphi University is now offering a “Pool Only” membership to adult resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. This membership will give the user use of Adelphi’s lap pool during stated hours until May 31, 2012. The cost of the membership will be $225. Our Recreation Department has the paperwork necessary to join this program. If you are 18 years or older and are interested In obtaining a membership, please our office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or Woodruff Hall at Adelphi University.

ADULT ART CLASSES AT CLUETT HALL

Beginning September 16, he Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning February 18th. Our classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10 week program will be $110 (Supplies are bought on your own- a supply list will be handed out at the first class). This ten week program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/stilllife in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice. Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise. Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes. ST. PAUL'S SENIOR CENTER HOURS

Fall is approaching and St. Paul’s Senior Center is open and again running programs for Seniors to enjoy! The Center is open from 9 am to 4 pm, Mondays through Fridays, for senior individuals to either participate in the programs offered or to just sit, relax and enjoy the setting. Programming for this week is as follows: Monday, September 12 9:15 am Exercise with Felicia, including stretching to music in chairs 10:30 am Exercise with Felicia 11:40 am Bingo Wednesday, September 14 9:15 am Exercise with Felicia, including stretching to music in chairs 10:30 am Exercise with Felicia 11:30 am Brown Bag Lunch and Birthday Cake for September babies, talks about our summer and how we faired with the hurricane! 12:45 pm Senator Kemp Hannon will come and speak on topics pertinent to us and our Village.
