FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE

By Donald Brudie

BEST WISHES TO OUR COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS

Throughout the next two to three weeks, many of our young people will be leaving for college. Some for the first time; others to conclude course requirements which will lead to undergraduate and graduate degrees. My colleagues on the Village Board join me in wishing them a safe journey and a most productive year. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our young people and look to them as our ambassadors to the many cities, towns and villages throughout the country which will be their temporary homes.

WELCOME ADELPHI STUDENTS

Next week will mark the arrival of Adelphi’s Class of 2015 onto the Garden City Campus. It gives me pleasure to welcome the students and to compliment them on choosing Adelphi. The Board of Trustees and I wish President Scott, his faculty and staff as well as the Class of 2015 and all students a most productive year.

The Village wants you to consider Garden City your home away from home during the next four years. While it is my hope that you will never require medical assistance during your stay at Adelphi, it is good to know that Garden City is the home to virtually every medical and dental discipline available and they are centered at 520 and 601 Franklin Avenue and on Seventh Street. We also invite you to visit our shopping areas and many fine restaurants on Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road; bring your friends and family, all are welcome.

PARKING FIELD #12 - EAST SIDE OF FRANKLIN

AVENUE BETWEEN 12TH AND 14TH STREETS

Work continues in Phase #3 of Parking Field #12. Due to inclement weather earlier this week, this phase of construction will continue into next week. Please do not park within the construction zone and exercise caution when driving or walking near areas of construction. Please also take notice of any temporary parking restrictions posted by the Police Department as they will be strictly enforced. Additional parking can be found in Parking Field #11 (west side of Franklin Avenue and in Parking Field #9 (south of Eleventh Street). The work in the northern half of Parking Field #12 is complete and this portion of the parking field is fully reopened for use. We appreciate your continued cooperation and patience during this much needed infrastructure improvement.

CURB, SIDEWALK AND ROAD IMPROVEMENTS - 2011

Paving work has been completed on Plaza Road, Bedell Avenue, Spruce Street and Prescott Street with striping work to follow soon on all blocks. Work on Main Avenue is currently underway with the contract ending on Fifteenth Street (east of Franklin Av- enue). During construction, residents should expect detours and some road closures. Concrete work continues on Boylston Street and Tremont Street. Please be careful when driving or walking near any roadway that is under construction, taking everyone’s safety into consideration. Residents will be notified in advance of any major work. We thank everyone for their patience and cooperation during these infrastructure improvements.

S.T.O.P. PROGRAM

The Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will conduct the first of its monthly S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program on Sunday, August 21, 2011. The program, which is being held at various locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, will make disposing of hazardous waste materials accessible to as many residents as possible.

Sunday’s program will be held at the Village Department of Public Works Parking Lot at 450 Milburn Avenue, Hempstead. The hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It literally takes minutes to drop off the materials. Workers are at the site and will remove the material directly from your car.

Under the S.T.O.P. Program, residents are able to take polluting materials to the facility and have them disposed of by a registered professional disposal company, free of charge. The facility will not accept the following materials: ammunition, explosives, fire extinguishers, fireworks, electronic recyclable waste, infectious or medical waste, propane tanks larger than 20 pounds, oxygen tanks, radioactive materials and unlabeled materials. If you have any questions, please call the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Sanitation at (516) 378-2200.
