Herbert J. Blauert P.C.C.
Herbert Blauert Herbert J. Blauert, a long time resident of Garden City, died peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2011. Herb was married to Elizabeth, who predeased him, and was currently married to Mrs. Marilyn Schmachtenberg of Merrick, N.Y. Herb is survived by his daughter Michelle and grandson, Michael.
Herb served in combat in Europe during WWII with a 155 M.M. artillery unit. He joined the American legion and served as a Nassau County Commander and a Post Commander of the American Legion William Bradford Turner Post #265 of Garden City over a 36 year membership. As a executive member he undertook the administration of the Post #265 Sutliff Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides a four year scholarship to a selected Garden City High school senior to Hofstra University. Herb also administrated the review and selection of 1 or more Garden City Juniors to attend boy’s State, a fully Post funded week’s participation in government study. Note: the former President Clinton was a Boys Stater.
Herb was a design architech and designed the Veteran’s Memorial at Eisenhower
Park and his designs were selected by the American Legion for clothing badges.
In addition to his Legion duties, Herb was also the Chef-de-Guerre of the 40 and 8 Organization, honoring WWI Veterans.
Herb was married to Marilyn just a few years before his passing. Marilyn is a Post Auxiliary Unit member and is noted for the adoption of a disabled Veterans ward at Northport VA Hospital. Marilyn coordinates visits to the ward to bring food and good cheer to the Veterans.
The family held the wake at the N.F. Walker funeral home in Merrick, NY and a Memorial Mass was held at the R.C. Church Cure of Ars in Merrick.
Herb will be interred at the Veterans Memorial Cemetary in Farmingdale.
