Creativity Abounds At Children’s Museum This Summer

Families can learn about famous artists, design their own birdhouse, explore the great outdoors, participate in a fun interactive theater workshop and so much more!

Feathered Family Fun

Monday, July 11 through Friday, July 15 from 1-4 p.m.

Do you like bird watching and family fun? Join us for a unique workshop as you design your own family birdhouse using wood pieces, bright paint, and other exciting materials. Hang your birdhouse at home to feed and watch Long Island’s native feathered friends.

Join the Green Teens in Our Backyard as we discover new ways to explore our natural world. Learn fun ways to help the environment, enjoy a variety of outdoor experiences and try your hand at cooking, crafts and other science activities. This week visitors will create insect creations! Do you know all the body parts of an insect? Join together a variety of fun materials to invent your own insect. This program is made possible by a generous grant from National Grid and is recognized as a Youth Inspired Program by the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC). Green Teens is an environmental education program that trains high school students to become outdoor educators.

Theater Fun!

Hundreds of school groups come through the LICM Theater all year to take part in our popular theater workshops such as “Simple Machines Please,” “Balance and Motion” or “WLICM Radio Live.” Here’s your chance to experience these fun programs without having to go back to school! Get some courage, jump on stage and join in the fun!

Explore the beauty and techniques of Amate Bark painting, one of the many folk arts of the Latin American culture. Learn the history, purpose and process of these skillfully crafted paintings. Create your very own twisting and curving nature painting using bark paper and colorful paints.

The Story of Snot

Thursday, July 14 at 3 p.m.

Did you know that you swallow enough snot every day to fill up a quart bottle? Join us during this educational science program as we explore the story of snot, learn about our sense of smell and put our olfactory abilities to the test. To top it off, we will create “snot” of our own for some super icky fun!

National Circus Project presents “Solo Circus”

Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m.

Run away with the circus performers from the National Circus Project. They will introduce everyone to the art of balancing, juggling, clowning, plate spinning and much more. Come see these world class performers live on stage as we bring the circus to the LICM Theater.

Remarkable Renaldo

Saturday, July 16 at 3:30 p.m.

Remarkable Renaldo of the National Circus Project has written and illustrated a book titled “Renaldo Joins the Circus.” Join us in the LICM Theater as Renaldo (whose real name is Al Calienes) shares his story about how he became a circus clown! Tickets are limited and can be obtained at the LICM Box Office on a first come, first serve basis.

Healthy Living Series!

Saturday, July 16 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Drop in for an exploration of the wonderful world of a healthy lifestyle as we help local Girl Scout Krystin Sinclair earn her Gold Award! Each week, fun activities and exercises bring a section of the USDA’s Food Pyramid to life, helping children and parents to make healthy living choices. This week visitors will learn about protein. Meet in Our Backyard. If inclement weather, session will be held in the Inner Lobby.

Grossology: The (Impolite)

Science of the Human Body

Through September 4

Sometimes it’s stinky; sometimes it’s crusty; and sometimes it’s slimy. Explore why your body produces mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly and stinky gunk at Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body.

Walk through a giant mouth to begin your exploration of the inner workings of your body. Mimic the build up of acid indigestion by causing the “Burp Machine” to release a giant belch. Explore the role of the kidney in a virtual reality experience in “Urine: The Game.” Test your olfactory skills as you identify body odors. Climb a large-scale replica of human skin, and discover other mysterious ways your body’s biology does what it needs to do to keep you healthy.

All ages. Free with museum admission.

Reconstructing Reality

Come discover the beauty of collage. This exhibition of artwork was created by individuals with Autism and other Special Needs participating in Art Therapy programs at Family Residences & Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE). The artists represented here are a courageous group of people who, in spite of their challenges, took the risk to “talk to us” through their art making process.

All ages. Free with museum admission. Early Childhood Programs stART (Story + Art): Tuesday to Friday from 12:30-1 p.m.

Music and Movement: Wednesday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. - Noon

Messy Afternoons: Saturday -Sunday, from 3:30-5 p.m.
