YOUNG ADULT 2011 SUMMER
READING CLUB
You Are Here
Join the Summer Reading Club by signing up at the YA desk or filling out an online registration by visiting the website www.gardencitypl.org and click on Young Adults. All registrants get a signing bonus prize bag. Read anything of your choosing: a summer assignment book, a recreational book, a comic book, newspaper, magazine, or eBook. You can also listen to an audiobook or Playaway. Fill out a mini-review form and hand it in for a raffle prize. Reviews can be done on paper and put in the raffle box in the Tweens N’ Teens Room or emailed to mkelly@gardencitypl.org and a print out will be placed in the raffle box for you. Win cool prizes!
Whether you travel near or far this summer, send a postcard to the YA department at the Library. Postcards will be displayed. Your imagination can take you on a journey as well. Travel to another world through reading, create a postcard about that journey and send it in to the Library! Keep a reading diary and show it to the Young Adult Librarian before Wednesday, August 12th. This will make you eligible to receive an invitation for the Back to School Bash without entering the weekly raffles. This year’s Back to School Bash will be held on Wednesday, August 31st. There will be a pizza party with a talent show and games, door prizes and auctions, and certificates of achievement.
If you are away all summer, you may still join and participate in the You Are Here Summer Reading Club. Email mkelly@gardencitypl.org or send “snail mail” to: YA Librarian, Garden City Public Library, 60 Seventh Street, Garden City, NY 11530. Any questions? Contact Mrs. Kelly at (516) 742- 8405 or come in to the YA desk.

20 REASONS TO JOIN THE
SUMMER READING CLUB
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been counting down the top 20 reasons why you should sign up your child for the Summer Reading Club. Here are the next five reasons:
1. When parents read, sing and play rhyming games with their toddler, they stimulate language and vocabulary development and build important foundations for learning to read.
2. The program offers toddlers an opportunity for group interaction.
3. The program allows elementary age school children to experience different genres.
4. The program offers recognition to readers.
5. The program offers free incentives to read.
This summer, the Summer Reading Club’s theme is “One World, Many Stories.” The Magic Carpet Riders Read-to-Me Club is for children ages 21/2-5 years old (not entering Kindergarten) while the Nomads Reading Club is for children entering Grades K-5 in September 2011. Special Needs children are welcome with an adult. As part of the Summer Reading Club, children can choose from a variety of activities that they can do either at home or at the Library in order to win prizes. Registration for both reading clubs begins on Monday, June 20 at 9:30AM in the Children’s Room and is ongoing. Non-residents can register beginning Tuesday, July 5 at 9:30AM.
