Dorothy Levi, a resident of Garden City since 1949, passed away on September 4th at the age of 86. She had been living with Alzheimer’s Disease for many years. She is survived by her children, Lorraine and Charlie, her granddaughter, Kiki, and her sister, Edith. Her husband, Bert, died in 2008.
Dorothy was born in New Hyde Park to Regina and Charles Witkin in 1924. She graduated from Sewanaka High School and then studied art at Pratt Institute. She married her husband, Bert, at the New Hyde Park Jewish Center in 1947. She worked in the art department of Life magazine until the birth of her children, and she remained involved with art her entire life.
She was an accomplished painter whose work was shown frequently in the area and is in many private collections. She also taught painting to local children. She was a passionate gardener and a member of the Rock Garden Society. Her love of plants is evident as the subject matter of many of her paintings.
Dorothy’s artistic talents were the center of all she did. She generously donated them to her children’s school, the PTA, Scouting projects, the Garden City Jewish Center and countless other organizaions. Her efforts for her husband’s business were particularly notable. For decades she designed promotional booklets, signs and window displays for Handy Andy, his hardware store in Stewart Manor,.
Her sixty-one year marriage to Bert, with its exceptional enduring love, was distinguished by laughter, world travel, and the warm home she created. She will be remembered for her good humor, her compassion, and her love for her friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
