There was a book reviewed in a recent N.Y. Times Review Section that caught my eye. The title “The King’s Best Highway” by Eric Jaffe with a sub title of The Lost History of the Boston Post Road, the Route that made America. You can still see the name Boston Post Road along with the new route numbers but since it takes you through small towns most folks stay on the super highways in the interest of getting where they are going quicker.
When I was a child, the Boston Post Road was the best way to get to Boston and my family drove it up and down many times. Back then when you went up in the Fall, you could see farmers haying and stacking dried corn stalks. There were farm stands where you could buy apples that are nearly forgotten today. Trees were showing their color and there was a bite in the air that made you feel excited along with the fact that you were going to visit part of your family and would have many cousins to play with. Cars then didn’t have heaters so you were bundled under a car robe but that only added to the spirit of adventure. You also knew that it was better than when the road was first started when you would have been either on horse back or in a coach pulled by horses. Take a look at the book for those of you who love history and even those who just like to travel.
I hope that all of you enjoyed the Labor Day weekend and I know that some of you got to see the Fire-Works displayed at the Cherry Valley Club and the Garden City Country Club. If you live near either one you might have gotten a good view of some of them, and you thought Fire Works were only for the Fourth of July!
