“DARING AND INTREPID AIRWOMEN
-Long Island’s Pioneer Women Aviators” is the title of a talk at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Sunday, September 19th at 4 P.M. in the Red Planet CafÇ of the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Guests are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
LONG ISLAND CRISIS CENTER (LICC) , the oldest 24-hour, seven-day-a-week crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline, is looking for volunteers for the upcoming Volunteer Counselor Training Program. Those interested in becoming a volunteer telephone crisis intervention counselor with LICC must first call (516)826-0244 to schedule an interview. No experience is necessary to volunteer and the hours are flexible to fit the individual needs of volunteers. All counselors must begin with orientation training. The free comprehensive orientation training program takes place over three evenings in LICC’s office in Bellmore.
MISCHIEF AND MAYHEM: THE POLICE REPORT
A GARDEN CITY WOMAN , age 52, was charged with violating the Nassau County social host law at 11:50 p.m. on September 5th after police were called to an Arthur Street residence because of a loud party. According to police, they observed several people drinking alcohol, some of whom ran from police. The woman was charged because police allege that she allowed underage drinking at the party.
A SOMERSET AVE homeowner heard his burglar alarm sound on September 4th, and when he investigated, found that the rear door had been damaged and opened. A witness saw a male, wearing a baseball cap, jeans and a dark jacket running away from the house.
GARDEN CITY DETECTIVES are investigating an incident which occurred on Fairmont Blvd. at 12:30 a.m. on September 1st. A 14 year old Garden City boy was walking there, when two vehicles drove up and a passenger got out and demanded the boy?s cell phone. The vehicles were described as green and black, and the passenger was a male Hispanic
PO SOMMER arrested a female, age 57, for various traffic offenses after he allegedly observed her using a hand-held cell phone and making an illegal turn into parking field 7S on September 1st. The woman was charged with those offenses, plus aggravated unlicensed operation (8 suspensions), driving with a suspended registration and having no insurance… TWO SMALL HOLES were found in the window of Garden City Salon and Spa on September 2nd. Damage was estimated at $200… A SET OF golf clubs was taken from Garden City Golf Club on September 2nd. They were valued at $2400… AFTER A LENGTHY investigation, police arrested a New Jersey man on September 3rd for allegedly sending fake magazine requests in the name of an acquaintance… PO WEDRA SPOTTED a motorist driving with illegally tinted windows on Clinton Road on September 3rd. Upon investigation it was discovered that the male, age 23 of St. Albans, also had seven suspensions on his license, an equipment violation and was uninsured and uninspected… A 44 YEAR OLD woman from Jamaica was arrested at a Garden City business on September 4th for allegedly using a New Jersey woman’s credit card to make travel reservations… A 46 YEAR-OLD Uniondale man was arrested on September 4th for allegedly stalking his Garden City former co-worker several times in August… A GOLF BALL was thrown through a Roxbury Road residence’s window on September 5th. Damage was undetermined… PO OSWALD arrested a 43 year-old Westbury male at Clinton and Pell Terrace on September 5th after allegedly seeing him make several unsafe lane changes. The driver was found to have a .20 blood alcohol level, and so was charged with aggravated DWI. (DWI charges are upgraded to “aggravated” if the alcohol level is over .18.)… PO MATOS ARRESTED a Hempstead man, age 67, for DWI on September 6th. The man was allegedly driving with no headlights and made an unsafe lane change. According to police he had a .15 blood alcohol level… ALSO ON SEPTEMBER 6th , PO Oswald arrested a Garden City man, age 20, making an unsafe turn from Prospect onto Meadow at 4:15 a.m. He was found to have a .11 blood alcohol level and no insurance… A MOTORIST on Rockaway Ave. at 4th Street reported that his car was hit by a BB pellet. The BMW had damage to its door… A 1997 TOYOTA valued at $800 was stolen from a parking field near the Nassau County courts on September 7th…
SMOKE AND BLAZES: THE FIRE REPORT
FIREFIGHTERS responded to a natural gas leak on Franklin Avenue on September 1st. National Grid was called to repair a pipe which was broken… A JEEP CHEROKEE was found to be leaking gasoline at a Nassau County parking field on September 1st. The fire department attempted to locate the owner, but was not able to, so firefighters cleaned up the gas and left a note for the owner… ANOTHER CAR was leaking fluids on September 2nd at the Garden City Schools administration building. The fire department cleaned up the mess and the car was towed away for repairs… A WATER FLOW alarm sounded at Sears on September 2nd. A leak was found in the parking garage, but no damage was done… A MOTOR overheated in the cafeteria of Garden City Middle School on September 3rd, causing smoke… A STRATFORD AVE resident called the fire department due to a smoke odor on September 4th, but it turned out to be a fire in a chiminea… FIREFIGHTERS assisted at a motor vehicle accident at Clinton and Brook Street on September 5th. There were minor injuries… A GARFIELD HOMEOWNER called the fire department when his oil burner malfunctioned on September 5th. No carbon monoxide was found, but the burner had emitted oily smoke… AN ODOR OF GAS at parking field 7S on September 6th turned out to be methane from a nearby sewer… THE FIRE DEPARTMENT was called for a small brush fire at the Garden City Pool complex on September 8th…
THERE WERE AN additional 15 calls from automatic alarms this week. Top reason: smoke from burnt popcorn (3 calls).
