It’s What’s Happening For Young Adults Getting Ready for Fall

The Young Adult Department is preparing for Fall. The very popular Babysitting Workshop will be held in September. Participants will learn the responsibilities of babysitting in this two part workshop. The First Aid Session will be held on Monday, September 20th from 4 -6PM. The Safety Session will be held on Monday, September 27th from 3:45-5:15 PM. Registration is underway. This program is limited to 30 YA’s.

The First Aid Session conducted by JoAnn Tanck, RN and Georgette Basso, RN, focuses on the care and health of young children. Participants are asked to bring a doll so they may practice the proper ways to hold a baby while feeding and changing diapers. The Safety Session conducted by Assistant Supt. of Recreation Ed Fronckwicz and Detective Richard Pedone, focuses on keeping you and those children in your care out of harm’s way and how to handle unfortunate situations should they arise. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to those attending both sessions.

ITALIC Calligraphy Workshop

On Saturday, October 2nd from 3-4:30PM, Joanne Insinga will teach YA’s calligraphy basics. Holiday cards will never be ordinary again! Beginners will learn the basic techniques and experienced teens will improve their techniques. Participants will keep calligraphy pen. Registration begins Saturday, September 18th at 9AM.

Yak and Snack Book Discussion

On Saturday, October 16th from 3-4PM the YA Department will discuss The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Anthony Conan Doyle. When a second member of the Baskerville family dies, Sherlock Holmes investigates and finds murderous greed behind the supposed curse. Registration begins Saturday, September 18th at 9AM. Pick up a copy of the book in the YA Department after registering.

Beat the High Cost of College

On Wednesday, October 20th from 7-8:30PM, Barry Fox, College Financial Aid Expert, will present a workshop on the steps necessary to obtain the maximum financial aid for college. Focus will be on student aid sources, financial aid forms, negotiations, eligibility for grants and loans, special family circumstances, New York State Aid, and the best free websites for scholarship search. The presentation will be 90 minutes followed by a question and answer period. Registration begins Monday, October 4th at 9:30AM.

Spooky Brush Head Figures Workshop

On Saturday, October 23rd from 3-4:30PM YAs can have a blast sculpting Model Magic on top of an ordinary paint brush to create creepy or friendly Halloween themed characters. Exaggerated facial features and fun embellishments complete this fun craft. Registration begins Saturday, October 2nd at 9:00AM. This program is limited to 20 YA’s.

Registration for all YA programs can be done through Eventkeeper by visiting the Library website at www.gardencitypl.org and clicking on the Calendar of Events. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of The Garden City Public Library. Priority registration is given to young adults, those entering grades 6 – 12 who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
