Ban Throwaway Papers
To the Editor:
Like most residents of Garden City who have home delivery of newspapers, I make a point of cancelling delivery when I am going to be away so as not to leave unsightly plastic bags of papers piling up on the sidewalk, advertising the fact that my house is empty. Well, my efforts and those of my neighbors who do the same thing are to no avail, thanks to the unsolicited plastic bags of advertising flyers that are thrown onto sidewalks and lawns in front of homes throughout the village on a weekly basis. Many have been there for weeks, as residents enjoy the end of summer out-of-town. At best, they are litter. At worst, they are an invitation to anyone with criminal intentions that a given house would be an easy target.
I ask our village leaders to consider banning this form of solicitation for the benefit of all homeowners.

Stop At Stop Signs
To the Editor:
While visiting the Garden City/Stewart Manor area recently, I took morning walks along Amherst St / Cambridge St and was amazed that absolutely no one came to a full stop at any stop sign. This was true elsewhere in the Garden City area too. Everyone rolled through the intersections. For the safety of those in your community - your family - please be alert, especially now that school will resume.

Financial Irresponsibility
To the Editor:
Just the mere suggestion of spending Village money to install security cameras in the business district is absurd. The last time I looked our Village is a residential community but we have become second-class citizens to the Chamber of Commerce and their members. It is evident that whenever the Chamber barks our trustees immediately bite. Before discussing and voting on additional expenditures I recommend a review of crime statistics throughout the Village which I’m sure will indicate the overwhelming victims are residents and not storefront businesses.
Where is the battle cry to install cameras on residential streets to prevent/solve the crimes listed each week in the GC News – (8/13/10- “TWO COMPUTERS, photography equipment and cash was taken from two vehicles parked on Clinch Avenue on the night of August 4th. The loss is estimated at $10,000; SOMEONE STOLE two wallets containing cash and credit cards from an office at Garden City Community Church on August 3rd; A BICYCLE worth $200 was taken from the garage at a Boylston Street residence on August 5th ; A SPECIALIZED HARD ROCK bicycle worth $450 was taken from a Princeton Street garage on August 8th; TWO GPS units and iPod accessories were taken from a Harvard Street vehicle on August 9th ; AN ATTEMPTED BURGLARY apparently took place at a Hamilton Road apartment on August 9th ; LOOSE CHANGE was taken from a vehicle at a Jefferson Street residence on August 10th”). However, the Village is being pressured to spend money it does not have due to the most serious crime ever recorded or was it just vandalism with a criminal mischief penal law charge.
Many homeowners opt to install alarms/sensors and even cameras in their residences at their own expense so why can’t the business owners do the same. Let the Chamber itself or the security companies who are members step up to the plate and take care of their own if they feel that the need is so great. If not, the storeowners should determine what security measures they deem necessary and write the expense off as a cost of doing business. This is clearly Not the Village’s fiscal responsibility.

Eagle Project Seeking Donations
To the Editor:
My name is Sean Kiley of Troop 134 BSA of Stewart Manor and I am in the midst of carrying out an Eagle Scout project for the benefit of the Roosevelt PAL. The project entails clearing our and renovating the Roosevelt PAL equipment facility as well as repairing and replacing, as needed, the sporting equipment they utilize for their PAL teams. Also, I plan to rebuild the dilapidated fence, and re-paint new parking lines. The Roosevelt PAL benefits and serves the teens and youths via morning programs, after school programs 5 days a week and sponsors virtually every major sport and fields much needed youth teams for the hundreds of kids within the nearby community. I am seeking donations to purchase needed materials for this project such as:
• Wooden fencing sections, 4x4 posts, paint
• Shelving units, work gloves, Brackets, Nails, work goggles , garbage bags
• Repair and replacement of various sporting equipment.
I will accept any amount of money because every donation will help.
Donations can be mailed to 47 Hilton Avenue Garden City NY 11530.

Rants Not Suitable
To The Editor:
In response to Ed Heaney letter published in 8/27/10 paper: I like the way things are in “Our Country” today, so please go away and never bother us again.
I certainly will not miss his rants, nor do I understand how they are suitable for a community newspaper.

We Need A Dog Park
To The Editor:
Today, our new puppy enjoyed her first visit to the dog run at Christopher Morley Park on Searingtown Road in Roslyn Estates. However, it is time consuming to travel there from our place here in town. I’m afraid “Molly” is not going to visit the park very often even though it is so good for her. I mentioned this issue to another dog owner who told me that the county has been petitioned to open several parks and that I should check some websites. So I did.
I learned from www.lidog.org that Parks Commissioner Jose Lopez agreed in 2008 to have one built at Eisenhower Park. (How convenient that would be!) Later that year plans were put on hold due to budget cuts. In October 2009 Mr. Lopez announced that the park would open in the spring of 2010. However, since then a new commissioner has been appointed and there has been no news about the proposed park. It is feared that the project may be stalled or cancelled.
It is critical that dog owners e-mail Nassau County’s new Parks Commissioner Carnell Foskey at cfoskey@nassaucountyny.gov . Just write a sentence or two about what a dog run would mean to you and inquire as to the progress of this project.
Even if you are not a dog owner, please help.

Vote For Independent Candidate
To the Editor:
Republicans and Conservatives have a unique opportunity to vote for Frank Scaturro in the Sept 14th primary. Frank is an energetic candidate who is free from the political machine in Nassau County and will represent “us” in Washington. Garden City needs a representative who is for limiting government, lowering taxes, reducing the deficit and changing the culture in Washington.
If we want someone with new ideas who is NOT beholden to the entrench political establishment, then vote for Frank in the Republican or Conservative primary on Tuesday, Sept 14th.
If you don’t vote, then you are part of the problem instead of being part of the solution. You can blame yourself if we get two more years of the same representation in Washington. Now is the time to say “ENOUGH” and return common sense back to Washington from Garden City.
