The rains finally came and just in the nick of time. If you rode around Garden City, you would have found many tree branches had died and, if you didn’t know it was still summer, you might have thought of fall foliage. The leaves were brown in tree after tree all over town because of the lack of water in the form of RAIN. We finally got it and, while those dead branches will not come back to life, the rest of the tree should survive. Remember that the trees by the curb are in more need of water as their root system branches out below the curb and under the street. If we have another drought, please remember to water them when you water other trees and shrubs on your property. Garden City is known all over as the TREE CITY and we would all like it to stay that way. Trees drink more water than shrubs so keep that in mind throughout the fall or you will not see their beauty in the spring.
The Chef’s Showcase Dinner at the Garden City Country Club this past week drew a group from the Cherry Valley Club to see what all the fuss was about. They not only had a great dinner with friends from Garden City Country Club, but had a very enjoyable time, too. Doing all this enjoying were Kathleen and Mel Griffen, Marge and Vincent Prestyly, and Janet and Bruce Littlejohn, along with G.C. Club members Marion and George Cordes . The dinner menu took them to France and I have heard that the menu would be American in September. This Dinner has everyone talking and is a wonderful tasting and relaxing evening.
Labor Day comes at the end of this week and it brings with it on September 2 nd happy wedding anniversary wishes to Frances and John Bermann. May they have a wonderful day and a great year ahead with plenty of good health to boot.
Happy birthday wishes go to Jane Nelson who will be doing her celebrating just around Labor Day. May she too have a year of health and happiness with many more such years to come.
Labor Day also brings a close for the swimmers and bridge players at the G.C. Pool but in this town there is always a bridge game to be found. Terry Ferrari, Ada Kane, Joan Schieck , Norma Takach and Jennie Pappas found one at the G.C. Country Club. All seemed to be having a great time.
Speaking of bridge, I have been asked to remind everyone who is interested in attending the American Legion Auxiliary’s Lunch and Card Party on September 19 th , that the deadline is September 10 th . If you are unsure please call Joan Nedelka at 747-7471 to see if they still have room for you. They meet at the Senior Center on Golf Club Lane.
The Long Island Fair will be coming to Old Bethpage Restoration Village from Friday, October 1 st through Sunday, October 3 rd . This year there will be a Standard Flower Show given by the II District Federated Garden Clubs of New York State. In addition there really is something for everyone from livestock to veggies and flowers. There are hayrides, corn shucking, juggling, stilt walkers, and pony rides, as well as rides on more exotic animals. They also have craft shows by children and adults and homemade jams, cakes and cookies provided by these groups. In addition, you can buy fresh apples and/or pumpkins to bring home to enjoy. There really is something for everyone!
The Garden City Library has a great fall planned for all of us so make sure you mark your calendars not to miss anything. Sal Catania has a great list of Monday Movies for you to enjoy and you are sure to see a friend such as Jane MacDougall there.
Have a great and safe Labor Day and, until next season, this is the last. See You At the Pool!
