At the Campsite.
At the Campsite. During the week of August 7, scouts from Garden City’s Boy Scout Troop 56 traveled to Ely, Minnesota, home of the Northern Tier High Adventure Camp.

On the way to Northern Tier a stop was made to tour the Soudan Iron Mine. To gain access to the mine an elevator had to be taken one half mile underground.

A week was spent on the boundary waters between the United States and Canada, paddling a total of 55 miles and portaging between lakes.  Along the way stops were made to enjoy waterfalls, fish, and spot wildlife such as bald eagles, beavers, grouse, and otters.  The scouts pitched their own tents each night and cooked their own meals.  One of the highlights of the trip was a dawn paddle, where the crew paddled under the stars during a meteor shower and watched the sunrise.  That same day freshly caught fish was served at dinner, and everyone relaxed during a brilliant sunset.

Relaxing at a Waterfall. Overall the trip was a great success.  There was even a rainbow spanning the sky during the trip ending “Rendezvous” campfire back at the Northern Tier base.

Troop 56 meets 7:30 p.m. on most Sunday nights at the Garden City Community Church, and welcomes all boys ages 11 through 17. Call 516-248-5994 for further details.
