Flags flying on Seventh Street
Flags flying on Seventh Street For the past 50 years the Boy Scout Troops of Garden City have displayed the American Flags on Seventh Street to commemorate National Holidays and other significant occasions such as: Martin Luther King’s birthday, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, and Veteran’s Day.  This year the Scouts from Troop 56, sponsored by The Garden City Community Church, have volunteered to display the Flags also on September 11th,, the ninth anniversary of the bombing of the World Trade Center.

The other Troops in Garden City participating in the Flagging of Seventh Street are: Troop 55, sponsored by The Cathedral of the Incarnation, Troop 80, sponsored by the American Legion William Bradford Turner Post 265, and Troop 243, sponsored by St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.

The Flags are purchased  and maintained  by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, under a program overseen by Althea Robinson, Executive Director.  The Scout Troops take turns to put up the Flags early in the morning and take them down in the evening. (The Flags are not displayed in inclement weather.)This coordinated effort is under the direction of the American Legion William Bradford Turner Post 265.

This visual display of American patriotism and values serves as a symbol to inspire not only the Scouts, but all who see the American Flags flying on Seventh Street.
