BLOOD DRIVE:
Nassau Community College (NCC), in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, will host its 16th annual “Back to School” Blood Drive on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on the 11th floor of the Tower Building. Make an appointment to give blood by calling 516.572.7883, or just stop in on September 14th and say, “I want to be a blood donor!” The process takes less than an hour and refreshments will be served to participants. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and in good health. Donors should come with some photo identification. Although small snacks will be provided, donors should eat before donating….
ASTORIA FEDERAL SAVINGS is launching its 11th annual Kids Tools for School collection drive in August to help prepare children for the start of the new school year. The program ensures that youngsters have the necessary notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, crayons and other supplies needed to learn and perform well in school.
The community is invited to participate by bringing their donations of new school supplies or cash (to purchase supplies) to any of Astoria Federal Savings branches during the month of August. Astoria Federal will match up to $10,000 in cash donations to purchase supplies in bulk….
END OF SUMMER” PJ PARTY: Grab your PJs and head to the Long Island Children’s Museum for Pajamarama! on Thursday, August 26. Celebrate the last few days of summer and bid farewell to the popular traveling exhibit, Night Journeys: An Adventure in the World of Sleep and Dreams.
Pajamarama! activities will run from noon to 4 p.m. and are free with museum admission. During the afternoon, visitors will learn about traditional Taiwanese sleep charms, create a fluffy counting sheep puppet, make a mini campfire sculpture to use for family storytelling or add a favorite bedtime excuse to the LICM bedtime quilt. All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, East Garden City, NY. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old. Under 1 year old FREE. $9 seniors. Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply. ALCOHOL VIOLATIONS: The Garden City Police issued an appearance ticket to a 18 year-old male for possession of beer on Nassau Blvd. on August 11th… ANOTHER APPEARANCE TICKET was issued on August 16th after police responded to a call about disorderly youths on Brompton Road. An 18 year old Garden City man was issued an appearance ticket for possession of three cans of beer… THEFTS FROM VEHICLES: On August 12th someone stole a GPS from one vehicle on Wyatt Road and loose change from another. .. THE SAME day someone rummaged through a car parked on Eleventh Street, but nothing appeared to be missing… ON AUGUST 13TH , a GPS unit worth $350 was taken from a vehicle parked in a Cambridge Avenue driveway… $20 IN LOOSE CHANGE was taken from a vehicle parked in a Westbury Road driveway on Aguust 14th…
PO HENNESSY stopped a female, age 45, from Hempstead on August 12th when he observed that her car had no front license plate and a cracked windshield. Upon investigation, he found that the driver had 11 suspensions on her license. She was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, driving without a license, having a broken windshield and “false personation” for allegedly giving a fake name to the officer… ON AUGUST 13TH police arrested a female, age 44, from Oakland Gardens, NY, for allegedly violating an order of protection by driving by the home of her ex-husband in Garden City… A LACROSSE pitchback was taken from the front lawn of a Third Street residence on August 13th. It was valued at $200… A 43 YEAR-OLD Hempstead woman was arrested for allegedly shoplifting $155 worth of costume jewelry from Sears on August 13th…
WAKING UP WITH A COP: PO Oswald arrested a Uniondale man, age 32, on August 15th who was asleep behind the wheel of his car. Upon approaching the car, Officer Oswald realized that the car was still in gear, so in order not to startle the sleeping driver (and possibly have him accelerate unexpectedly) Oswald had to reach in and carefully put the car in park before waking the driver. The driver was arrested for DWI (.08 alcohol level) and DWI for drugs, as well as possession of crack cocaine. He was also cited for driving too slowly and having tinted windows…
A $200 MOUNTAINBIKE was taken from a 6th Street home’s garage on August 16th… PO WEDRA and Garden City detectives arrested a 56 year-old Garden City man on August 16th for harassment. According to police, the man spat at and threw a drink at a woman on August 13th… PO MERCEDA pulled over a male 38 year-old Hempstead man for not signaling on August 16th. A license check found that he had an outstanding bench warrant for a drug offense as well as a suspended license. He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, unlicensed operation and driving an uninsured, uninspected, unregistered vehicle…

While there was no apparent entry, police are classifying it as an attempted burglary… SOMEONE punctured two tires on a vehicle behind a Franklin Avenue office building (south of 14th Street). Damage was placed at $360…
SMOKE AND FIRE: THE FIRE REPORT
A LINCOLN STREE T homeowner reported trees on wires on August 11th. The falling limb had pulled the neutral wire out of the house… A THIRD STREET resident asked for assistance with a smoking outdoor light fixture on August 12th. It had an electrical short… A HAMPTON ROAD homeowner had a similar complaint on August 18th when a light fixture there shorted out…
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT cleaned up spills after a motor vehicle accident on August 13th at Stewart and Edgemere… THEY ALSO ASSISTED at a motor vehicle accident on August 14th at Washington and Transverse, as well as another accident on Clinch Avenue on August 16th and one on Franklin and Tenth on August 17th… ANOTHER ACCIDENT on Homestead and Hayes on August 15th also required cleanup assistance… A CAR ON Seventh Street on August 14th had smoke coming from the engine, but it was found to be just smoking excess oil, not a car fire… A GRASS FIRE was put out on Osbourne Road on August 13th. Its source of ignition was unknown… FIREFIGHTERS assisted at a Stewart Avenue home on August 17th when a friend was concerned that the homeowner was not answering their door. The Fire Department gained entry and the police assisted with the situation…
