One Woman Show Benefits Breast Cancer Program
Jenny Allen will perform her one-woman show I Got Sick Then I Got Better to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at 2 pm, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall on the main campus of Adelphi University in Garden City.
Written by Ms. Allen, I Got Sick Then I Got Better combines wit and bittersweet emotion to describe her diagnosis and treatment for ovarian cancer. First performed on Martha’s Vineyard in 2007, the production was later moved to off Broadway. Says Ben Brantley of the New York Times, “Ms. Allen speaks with passion and precision.” Erik Haagensen of Backstage writes, “Allen’s warts-and-all look at her experience celebrates the resiliency of the human spirit, and I was glad to be reminded of it. By the time you’re sent home, you feel as if Allen is one of your best friends, and you want to call her up and make plans for Sunday brunch.” Tony Award winning James Lapine and Darren Katz direct I Got Sick Then I Got Better.
