Dr. Anton George Kovary, Jr.
Dr. Anton George Kovary, Jr.
Funeral services were held at St. Josephs Church for Dr. Anton George Kovary, Jr. who passed away at 90 years of age, peacefully after a lengthy illness on July 7, 2010 at his primary Garden City residence of 53 years.
Known to his family by his middle name of George and to his many friends as “Doc”. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, survived by his beloved wife Rose (Weihl) of 63 years, his five children: Anton, Damien, Katherine, Christopher and John, their respective spouses and 14 grand children.
First generation American, son of Anton and Theresa, brother of John, George was the first in his family to attend college earning a degree from Queens College and a medical degree as a graduate of SUNY Downstate Brooklyn Medical School in 1945 under a Navy program.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Dr. Kovary served as a Medical Officer stationed in Guam and Okinawa. Stateside he became an attending surgeon at Queens General Hospital and Mary Immaculate near his childhood home in Jamaica, later establishing a private practice in Queens. Needing more space for his growing family he established roots in Long Island where he served once again as a Medical Officer for the U.S. Postal Service and for the Bureau of Disability for the Department of Social Services until his retirement.
Dr. Kovary leaves a legacy that resonates with deep spiritual devotion (for most of his adult life he served as a commentator at St. Josephs Parish Church), a strong work ethic, a keen sense of the power of education, and the strength and love of a family.
George’s passion was sailing and he lived his life like much like he sailed - - always looking for adventure and a challenge, but counting on God to be his light house in stormy seas.
His family wishes him to be remembered for the good he did here on earth and wish him safe passage to Heaven’s calm seas.
Final resting place is Queen of All Saints Cemetary in Central Islip, New York.. The family requests Mass cards in Georges name in leiu of flowers.
