Wrong Way Driver CausesMultiple Car Accident
A New Jersey woman caused a multiple car accident at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 25th, when she drove a half-mile in the wrong direction on Stewart Avenue. According to police, witnesses saw her enter the eastbound lanes of Stewart Avenue, driving west, at Clinton Road. She then proceeded a half mile to Butler Place before colliding with three other cars. According to police and fire reports, the woman’s car overturned on impact.
Two people, including the driver, were taken to the hospital, although police say that the injuries, which include broken bones and neck pain, were not life threatening.
Police say her reasons for driving the wrong way were undetermined. According to police she seemed to be aware that she was going the wrong way. However, English was not her native language, so her reasons for her behavior were not clear.
The Mitubishi Endeavor which was driven the wrong way on Stewart Avenue. The car had been overturned in the accident.
Police say that neither alcohol nor excessive speed played a part in the accident. She was charged with reckless driving.
The Garden City Fire Department was also on the scene to help extract victims and clean up the fluids spilled from the destroyed cars.
