Stratford Avenue’s Quest teacher, Richard Madden, recently recognized for being the top advisor participating in the Stock Market Game during the 15-week Fall 2009 session. At an awards ceremony at Adelphi University on June 9th, Mr. Madden was presented with an award from the Foundation for Investor Education.

During the past school year, the fourth and fifth grade students in Mr. Madden’s Stratford Avenue classes participated in the Stock Market Game. They experienced what it was like to make educated investments. With $100,000 of “play” money, the students learned about diversification when buying stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. They managed portfolios in cooperative groups over several months, learning investment strategies along the way.

The children also participated in the Invest Write competition, where they wrote essays about what they learned, and what they would like to save money for in the future. Mr. Madden commented, “The students were full participants in the game and loved playing, even when they lost money. As for the award, it was an honor to be recognized.”
