Most of us do our house cleaning and repair work in either the spring or fall, but when it is a school it must be done in the summer and that is just what Garden City Schools are doing. It seems that they are not just repairing the roof on the Senior High School but putting a whole new one on it. As for the Middle School, they seem to be expanding the parking (I could be wrong) on the side of the school. Gone are the grass circle and the trees in it as well as the few remaining trees that stood in a line by the Athletic Field. While the trees and the circle added a lovely touch to the building, parking has always been a problem when there is an event and parents will have run out of on-site parking. I hope that when they are finished, the small “pool” at the Stewart Avenue entrance has several bigger drains. While the entrance is always flooded with a heavy rain because Stewart Avenue is crowded, drains - bigger and better - might be the answer. Then there would be no skating rink in cold weather at the entrance. But my real feelings go to the workers who are used to working in the summer, but this one has been a scorcher and I do feel sorry for them.
The Garden City Pool has been a wonderful place to go to get cooled off and even the hardy bridge players have been seen in the water. Barbara and Jack Nothel have taken advantage of the water as well as the cool breezes. It seems that when they put the pool there, they really knew what they were doing. If there is a slight breeze, they not only get it but it seems to be a better one than any other place in town. Thanks a bunch to whoever made the decision on this one.
Speaking of bridge, the Ladies/Lunch/Bridge was held this past Thursday, July 15 th at the Garden City Country Club. Doris Graham was the happy winner of the monthly door prize. That small slam took a long time coming but when it did it made Madelene Kenny and Dorothy McCartney very happy. They made it in six diamonds and just under the wire for the competition. Somehow the grand slam has been very elusive and several tables have even taken a chance and bid up but did not make it. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the August Bridge would be held on Thursday, August 19 th and to be sure to make your reservations. She was also informed that someone had started a rumor that this bridge was no longer being held. not true! They play every month that the club is open as every member and guest know.
The Long Island Choral Society will be holding its annual Summer Sings at the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Church in Freeport on Sunday, August 22 nd at 7 p.m. They will be doing Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” I received the notice too late for the July Sing which was Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass.” Both of these will be on its concert schedule starting in November.
Happy birthday greeting go to Ophelia Paterakis, who will be celebrating on the 24 th of July, to Agnes DiChiara, w ho will do her celebrating on the 24 th , to Dan D’Addario who will be blowing out the candles on his cake on the 25 th and last but not least to Marye Heston who will do her celebrating on the 29 th . Talk about having all your ducks in a row, they have all their dates in a row. Many happy returns of the day to one and all and good wishes for many more happy and healthy years to come. Just how did you folks come up with this - a special price on candles perhaps?
Garden City was sad to learn of the passing of Arthur Hug on Sunday, July 11 th . Arthur passed on in his sleep and everyone who knew him will miss his gentle humor and happy smile. Our thoughts and prayers go to his daughter Jeanette and the rest of his family. His wife Judy predeceased him a number of years ago.
We are at count down time with just one more week before our hot summer is half over. As the calendar says, Labor Day marks the end. The Pool closes and school starts but in this town there is always a lot to look forward to.
Your thought for the week: Money isn’t everything, but it sure keeps the kids in touch. See you at the pool!
