July 4
th
is all over and it surely was a great weekend and week for swimming in our lovely G.C. Pool. But the second week of July (full week, that is) held a blessing for all of us as well as our tan lawns with the wonderful shower that brought life to the grass. You just can’t have it all - all the time. If we have a drought again, do remember to water your trees. They drink quite a bit of the water from our sprinklers, but they give us oxygen and many other benefits. If you are redesigning your property, do remember when you plant those young saplings give them lots of room as you don’t want them to grow into each other and ruin the whole effect and also ruin each other. Their root systems need room for growth so give them plenty of room. They will thank you for it with many benefits.
Speaking of the Pool, yes, I did get there and it was wonderful and refreshing, too. How Mari does it with a new configuration of plants each year is beyond me but it certainly does look great. Enjoying the pool recently was Rosemary Brown, recently returned from a tour of Alaska with friends. She loved it and has the pictures to prove it so just ask her. She will also be able to tell you what she liked best and has some tips on restaurants. She is willing to share her info with you, too.
Margaret Arcese was also doing her lap swimming and she too returned from a spring trip with her daughter Mary to Germany. They also had a great time seeing many new and interesting places so if you are planning a trip there do a few laps along with her and she too will be a wealth of information on what to see.
Martha Widner, Ruth Labosco, and Helen and Emile Gentile were also enjoying the cool waters.
July is a very quiet month for birthdays and even weddings but we will have more next week.
The ladies of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead had a wonderful trip in to see the show “Billy Elliot” and they all enjoyed it along with a delightful lunch before the show. It got wonderful reviews and I just know they are planning another trip soon. Prem Chauhan, the Drama Dept. Chairlady, planned the whole thing and those who attended are singing her praises.
Another group is also busy this summer planning that Club’s Friendship Luncheon to be held at the Cherry Valley Club on Tuesday, September 21 st at noon. The committee consists of Ann Heinzelmann and Veronica Witt as Co-Chairladies, Ruth Lacy will be taking the reservations, Regina Dowling and Gerry McHugh will be doing the photography for the event, Marge Moran and Catherine Hopkins are in charge of the invitations (they will be mailed just about Labor Day so do watch for them) and Muriel Urban will be doing publicity. The menu selections sound great and a glass of wine or mixed drink is also included in the price of $49 per person. It’s a lovely setting so be sure you get your reservations in before the deadline of September 14th . Guests are also welcome.
The ladies at the Garden City Country Club have a wonderful schedule of tournaments lined up for the whole season. Chairing the 18 Hole Tournament Schedule are Mary Ann Crawford and Janet Sheridan; their committee consists of Marilyn O’Grady, Jeanne Rohrbach and Ginny Erhardt. Karen Risi and Maryclair Leistman are Co-Chairing the 9 Hole Tournaments. With a great leadership group like this, exciting things will be happening all season.
There was a lot of excitement outside the Garden city Community church this past Sunday with a large group of students packing cars and station wagons for their mission trip to Rutland, Vermont. They will spend their time helping paint houses, clean and restore parks, and even baby-sit for parents who had to work or look for work. They were a happy group looking forward to helping out. We should all be proud of them.
That same Sunday a recent graduate of our G.C. High School Kimberly Foxen was the soprano soloist at the same church’s Worship Service. She has a beautiful voice and sings with great feeling and excellent projection and tone. She will be attending the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and church members are hoping that she can return once in a while to sing for them again.
Now, have a nice week and perhaps I’ll see you at the pool.
