Old Bethpage Village To Receive Visit From Abe Lincoln

The Civil War will come alive at historic Old Bethpage Village Restoration over the weekend of July 17 - 18 as Civil War soldiers and President Abraham Lincoln congregate to provide a vivid portrait of that era, announced Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

Amid the historic 19th-century structures that make up the Village, visitors can experience the roar of a Civil War-period cannon as demonstrated by Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson’s “Flying Artillery” and walk among the soldiers in two re-created infantry encampments (one from 1862 and another from 1864). In addition, there will be a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces employing the tactics used by American officers in 1863 and the display of a typical Union Army field hospital in the local church.

The soldiers will also perform military drills, musket firing and camp duties, and children can participate in a re-created Civil War drill several times daily in the Village crossroads. Fiddle music will be performed from noon until 4 p.m.

Additionally, this year, the Civil War experience at Old Bethpage Village will be capped by a visit from President Lincoln and a tour of the headquarters of a renowned Civil War Confederate general, A.P. Hill.
