Garden City Middle School Safe Sun Assembly

Dr. Goydos speaking with attendees.
Dr. Goydos speaking with attendees. On Thursday, May 27th, all the sixth graders at the Garden City Middle School attended a special Sun Safety Assembly, presented by the Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation and assisted by Dr. Ted Daly, Garden City Dermatology. The students viewed excerpts from “Skin Deep”, which emphasizes the history of tanning and the direct connection between tanning beds and skin cancer. Dr. Daly was able to answer the students’ questions and review the importance of using an SPF of 30 or more, wearing sunglasses and staying out of the sun during peak hours. “The Dark Side of the Sun”, the video created by Mollie’s Fund emphasizes the need for individual responsibility to protect yourself against the sun, dangers of tanning beds and the importance of mole identification. Mrs. Susan Lee, MS Assistant Principal, reminded the students of their role to become ambassadors to their family and friends to insure that the message of sun safety was received throughout the community. Mrs. Lorraine Phillips, RN, (GCMS) sent a letter home with the students requesting parents support the practices outlined in the presentation to insure their families have a sun safe and happy summer. Each student received a hat and a copy of the brochure “Have You Checked Your Skin Lately?” Mollie Biggane was a former GC Middle School student, who lost her battle with melanoma at twenty.
