Summer will be here in just about three weeks and by now we should be adjusting to the fact that this will be a very different year weather-wise. The important things coming up in June will have nothing to do with the weather. They are Flag Day on the 14
th
(Don’t forget to fly your flag), Father’s Day on the 20
th
(Don’t forget to get something for dear ole Dad) and then summer will arrive on the 21
st
of June. There will be graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and many other activities to keep us all busy. So, cross your fingers and pray for sun because the G.C. Pool will open and we want good weather to enjoy that truly beautiful spot in our town.
The folks at the Cherry Valley Club held their last Dinner/Bridge on the 19 th of May and there were eighteen tables in play following their buffet dinner. Maxine and Ken Cunningham came in with the first small slam of the evening in six spades. Again that grand slam proved to be elusive but the two winners of the door prizes were Fran Flaherty and Virginia Tierney . Bridge Chairman George Rivara announced that the Dinner/Bridge would return on Wednesday, September 15 th . Now the folks there will concentrate on golf and tennis.
The readers groups here in town will be taking off for at least the month of July and some for the whole summer. However the Reader’s Circle at the G.C. Community Church will be back on August 10 th at 12 noon in the Church Parlor. The book will be The Help by Kathryn Stockett so you have plenty of time to read it. Lunch will be provided by the hostesses Lynn Sullivan and Julie Fehler while Pat Gordon will provide dessert. This gives you plenty of time to get and read the book. Good reading ladies!
New and experienced knitters will be doing their thing this summer making scarves, hats, and mittens for families at the shelters associated with the Mary Brennan INN to be distributed in December. If you can’t knit they will teach you. Just contact Cathryn Mezzo at 742-5708 to keep your hands and hearts busy during the summer season.
The ladies from the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead went on a tour recently and reports have it they had a great time. The first stop was Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay where they learned about history from the American Revolution to the late 1800’s. Then it was a delicious lunch also in Oyster Bay followed by a tour of the Coe Mansion at Planting Fields with its wonderful Wedding Exhibit. Some of the ladies on the tour were: Margaret Arcese, Eileen Bishop, Janet Castles, Joan Dixon, Marge Goldsmith, Jane MacDougall, Isabelle Smith, Karen Reiter, and Joan Whiting. They are all awaiting the next tour which will be on Wednesday, September 29th .
Nita and Woody Johnson got back from Florida in time to celebrate their 65 th Wedding Anniversary. They did it up big as they were married on Memorial Day weekend and have been celebrating both of these events ever since. Good to have you home again and we look forward to hearing all about your stay in Florida.
Happy birthday wishes also go to Frieda Stark, who will be blowing out the candles on her cake on June 5 th and to Kay Hayes who will be doing her celebrating on June 7 th . May both lovely ladies have a wonderful day and a good year ahead with many more to come.
The Children’s Department at the Garden City Library will be keeping both the children and their parents busy with their programs on Family Nights (Wednesdays at 7 p.m. - registration needed); The Summer Reading Club for the Little Swimmers (toddlers and pre-K); and the Deep Sea Divers (K-5), Check for times and registration at the Library. For those of us who have made it past that group, we will have the Monday MARVELOUS Movies with Sal Catania. This will keep the whole town occupied.
Keeping you up to date on the SCAM calls, I have heard from several other folks who have had them and they can be troublesome. Keep the police informed of any information you can get from the call and don’t send them anything - just hang up.
Your thought for the week is: If little ears should not hear it, big mouths should not say it. See you next week.
