20 Reasons to Join the Summer Reading Club
Last week, we listed the first five reasons why your child should join the Summer Reading Club. The next five reasons are:
1. Summer Reading Clubs promote reading for enjoyment.
2. Summer Reading Clubs encourage parents to read to their children.
3. Summer Reading Clubs may be the only non-sport activity available to children.
4. Toddlers respond to the sound of language.
5. Toddlers and preschoolers get the opportunity to hear wonderful stories for the first time.
The Summer Reading Club’s theme this year is “Make a Splash: Read!” The Little Swimmers Read-to-Me Club is for children ages 2 1/2-5 years old while the Deep Sea Divers Reading Club is for children entering Grades K-5 in September 2010. Children with special needs are welcome with an adult. Registration for both reading clubs begins in the Children’s Room on Monday, June 21 at 9:30AM and is ongoing. Non-residents can register beginning Tuesday, July 6 at 9:30AM.

Summer Traveling!
Getting ready to take a vacation this summer? Then come to the Library and read some books on where you’re planning to visit. We have books on different states, countries, and historical sites that you can check out before you go. We also have picture books and easy readers about going on vacation, such as Arthur’s Family Vacation by Marc Brown, Henry and Mudge and the Tumbling Trip by Cynthia Rylant, or Pictures From Our Vacation by Lynne Rae Perkins. For older readers, you can check out the chapter books, Eleven Kids, One Summer by Ann Martin, Junie B., First Grader: Aloha-ha-ha by Barbara Park, or Surf’s Up, Geronimo from the Geronimo Stilton series. Whether you’re going away this summer or staying at home, your imagination can travel anywhere when reading a good book!
Please check the Library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
What’s Up For Young Adults
Make Waves @
Your Library
If you will be in Middle School or High School in September 2010, you are invited to “Make Waves @ Your Library” by joining the Young Adult 2010 Summer Reading Club at the Garden City Public Library. Registration begins Monday, June 14th and continues throughout July. All registrants get a signing bonus bag.
Participants can read anything - a summer assignment book, a favorite author, a newspaper or magazine, or even listen to an audiobook. YAs can fill out a mini-review and hand it in to win a raffle prize. Reviews may be done on paper or by email to mkelly@gardencitypl.org and a print out will be placed in the raffle box. If you’re not into doing reviews, you can keep a reading diary and show it to a YA Librarian by Thursday August 12th. Reading club participants will get an invitation to the Back to School Bash on Wednesday August 18th.
